If it happens whether strings are fretted or "open," I'd guess there's something loose and vibrating. I've had tuning pegs that were a bit loose, tailpiece covers that worked loose, and -- of course -- top braces that loosened, especially at the ends, and "buzzed" a bit when the instrument was strummed hard.
Check if it's all strings or just one course, and if it occurs when strings are fretted, or when they're not. Hold the mandolin next to the ear, and see if you can locate the source of "distortion." As John B suggests, strings that aren't firmly held within nut and bridge slots can also buzz a bit.
