Default I went and did it!

Well, I am now the proud (and more than a little surprised) owner of an acoustic guitar. I'm not sure where I picked up the guitar bug, but it sure did bite. I'm having fun with the gigantic beastie, I must say, and looking forward to learning more than the few stumblesome chords I've picked up so far. First mandolin, then octave mandolin, now guitar--it's almost as if these fretful instruments are addictive or something .

I welcome suggestions for learning. I'm reading, watching YouTube videos, and doing stuff like that to get started.

Charlie, it's just a plain-vanilla starter quality acoustic guitar. Kevin, yeah, I think I have that part down pat.

Congratulations. My wife jumped from a concert uke to guitar (Taylor Baby in her case), and I don't think she's going back. It did take her a while before she could mash down all those great big, shiny strings.

Ha! Sheila, for once I beat you in the acquisition race. I got two guitars last winter
So far I just keep them around for guests to pick on and sometimes bring one to the brewery for friends to join in with. But I’m planning sometime to pick one up.

I thought about taking up banjo but didn't want to alienate all my music friends. My 50 year guitar habit has finally topped out (hopefully) with a Martin Custom Shop D-18.

You have done gone and done it for sure. My first Inexpensive acoustic was nothing more than a fine-sounding gateway drug to a fabulous Martin. Good luck but start saving now because it will happen!

Well now, I have so many things to tell you:
    1. Rich got the banjo, so I don't have to. (I'm kind of glad for that. I just don't see myself as a banjo type. But then I'm not sure I see myself as a banjo type's wife, either . . . .)
    2. I played upright bass for a little while in junior high, when I was at a school that had no orchestra, but the music director would let me play bass with the woodwinds class. So I've been there, done that.
    3. I figure if I play my cards right, I could be ready for a "nice" guitar by Christmas, or maybe my birthday (which comes a month after Christmas.)
    4. When we were in California a few weeks ago to celebrate our son-in-law's retirement from the US Navy, our much-beloved granddaughter Daphne Kate was having a great time playing our "family" mandolin while I played my "forever" mandolin. She enjoyed it so much that we sent her a ukulele for her birthday, coming up on Saturday. Both her parents and her eldest brother have music experience, so I'm confident they can help her get started.

So, Sheila, I don't see a guitar on your list. Your guitar doesn't have a name yet? Or (heaven forbid!) the guitar's too plain-vanilla to rate a name !?!

I started playing more guitar the fall before the initial lockdown after a couple of graduations and the addition of a budding bass player to our youth praise band (I’m the adult supervision/stray cat herder). Really getting into Jason Isbell and James McMurtry over the past year has kept it going (no youth band since last March).

I’m not playing any less mandolin or octave, just adding some guitar time each day. And the electrics are fun to play around with from time to time, too. The good news is you can get a really serviceable acoustic or acoustic/electric flat top for a very reasonable price. And, I think a few importers get more of their guitars right than they do mandolins, as there are some nice inexpensive gems out there.

    CarlM,
Thank you! Sally it is, and now she has a theme song. (Though one could twist the meaning around of Clapton's "Lay Down Sally" and make it work for a guitar, I suppose. This song is better.)

I note that except for the bass, we have here in the house, and are learning to play (isn't one always still "learning to play"? I sure hope so!) all the instruments featured in that song. I think being able to play that song as performed on each of those instruments would indicate a level of proficiency.
