Default Anybody ever been to the Mandolin Cafe?

It shows up every time I search for "mandolin cafe forum", and I can't help being curious.

The one in Roscoe, Illinois, I mean. Looks pretty cool.

I had never noticed the café in Google before you mentioned it so I looked it up. It does look like a neat place. If we had a place like that here in Columbus, I'd probably be a regular. I thrive on coffee and acoustic music.

I pulled up the Google map of Roscoe (Why? I don't know.). I don't believe I've ever seen so many cookie-cutter houses in one place. If you get bored, pull up the map and look west of Roscoe.

Which one? There are several - or were, last time I checked ... 2 1/2 years ago, after someone mentioned one had opened in Raleigh. The one in Roscoe may be newer, as it's not on this list. And the one in Tacoma has since closed. Here is my post #3 from that thread:

Another one - cool! Someday there will be a Mandolin This-Or-That in every city. Every time I check there are more. Website: http://mandolinraleigh.com/; facebook: http://www.facebook.com/mandolinraleigh

Other ones I have found on the interweb:

Mandolin Café, Tacoma WA: http://www.themandolincafe.com/ It has a webcam at http://www.stickam.com/mandolincafeloveland

The Mandolin Café, Loveland CO: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mandol...d/173491399623

Mandolin Aegean Bistro, Miami FL: http://www.mandolinmiami.com/

    Mandolins Restaurant, Orlando FL: http://www.orlandoescape.com/radisson/mandolins.htm

The Mandolin, Missoula MT: I haven't found a web presence yet

Mandolin's Restaurant, Saskatoon, SK Canada: Don't see a website but you can order online here

Mandolin Restaurant, Chelsea (London) UK: No web presence yet either

Mandolin Restaurant & Pub Selangor, Malaysia (just outside Kuala Lumpur): http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mandol...app_2309869772

    Mandolin Restaurant, Zhejiang, China: http://en.zjol.com.cn/10en/system/20...17505637.shtml

There is a Mandaloun Restaurant in Jacksonville FL (http://www.mandalounjax.com/) an also in Redwood City CA (http://www.mandaloun.biz/) but that probably doesn't count.

BTW, Don Stiernberg has an album out called "Don Stiernberg's Mandolin Restaurant." Not familiar with it, but I'll bet it contains very tasty fare and is very low-fat, low-calorie, and low-carb. The menu is superb.

That was then, this is now. No idea how current any of that info is. Also, Caleb said:

Used to be an Italian place in Arlington, Texas called Mandola's. drove by last month and didn't see it. Folks around here are highly sophisticated and prefer top-shelf fare like Olive Garden.

Coffee, acoustic music, and used books! Every town should have one.

The place in Roscoe, IL, is about an hour from here. I'm sure I've driven within a couple miles of it numerous times. Next time I get that way, I'll make a point to stop in and shall report back. I actually have some friends that live within a couple miles of there. Perhaps I can get a scout report.

Well, it doesn't have the word "mandolin" in its name, but the Big Horn Mountain Stage Co. in Ten Sleep, WY has the biggest mandolin sign outside it that I've ever seen. I rode by it on my m'bike once, and had to double back to check it out. The link below makes it look smaller than I remember it .... (I'm sure in a few years it will be 100 feet long in my memory. bb

Richmond, Virginia used to have a, "Cafe Mandolin." There were actually two Asian mandolins as still life at the entrance.

Good food for a few years. Shuttered about 5 years ago. Heck - maybe 10 years ago. Getting old makes some recollections seem so close at hand. . .

The restaurant, simply known as "Mandolin", in the five points of Raleigh NC is very good.

    Slight update ...

While I was spending most of August prepping, undergoing, and recovering from open heart surgery at a fine facility in Miami Beach, I spent a bit of time thinking about how to celebrate my survival of all that and release back into the wild. I recalled the existence of a mandolin-named restaurant thereabouts, which is the Mandolin Aegean Bistro - still in existence, and serendipitously, quite nearby the hospital. Their prices about put me under again, though. I still found myself charmed by the notion of at least visiting it, getting a picture or two snapped by it, and asking whoever was in charge how they came by the name - and did they know what a mandolin actually is. I also thought perhaps playing a Greek song or two on the mandolin might earn me a snack or appy or something by way of barter. But when my friend who was supposed to pick me up crapped out at the last minute, these plans went by the wayside, as the option for leisurely travel vanished as quickly as a stuffed grape leaf. Note to Caleb: This is the place pictured in your post #5, which is not the place in Roscoe, IL.

I did also find another place in Miami, though, called Mr. Mandolin. It's much less fancy and expensive, and might have been where I'd have ended up going for lunch if my plans had cooperated. Going to either of these establishments will have to wait for another time.
