Thread: Tight Waverly's

    Default Tight Waverly's

This is about the guitar tuners on the dreadnaught I built in 1998. Just re-strung it (rare) and all of them are about equally tight unstrung. They're individual tuners which should eliminate the drilling imperfection that often plagues mandolins.
I guess I'm not much at maintaining this stuff but any recommendations on lube or what else?
    John?

Have you considered Kramp Easy Lube?

In the meantime I had just gotten some Boeshield T9 to lube the electric steps on my motor room so I sprayed on in a cup and applied with a fine tip brush. Seems to have helped.
Jim, gonna see you in Winfield? Gonna be a hot time...literally.

I've used Tri-Flow with good results.

Finish line teflon bike chain lube does wonders on the gears.

Ironically, I found it pretty useless for lubing bike chains.

I've been of the opinion that quality tuners shouldn't need lubrication, but these seem to have progressively gotten tighter or maybe I'm getting weaker.

There's always possibility of drilling imperfection if the holes are out of square. On mandolins there are two possible problems. one is alignment/squareness other is spacing between posts. Third problem can be when screwholes are not well centered and screws push the mounting plate to side and post binds against hole in headstock. If tuner works well when it is not installed on headstock the problem is in one of the abovementioned. Otherwise it needs cleaning and lubing. Rarely tuner can be damaged by use with improperly aligned gears from manufacture.

I could see it if a slotted headstock and some wood movement over time.
Pull one out; if it’s still tight, it’s the tuner itself, and a bit mysterious. At that point, i’d take a closer look for a disintegrated plastic washer, etc.
