Local Craigslist, asking $12,345 for an Epiphone mandolin from 1980.

    https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/...377013650.html

Mandolin is allegedly signed by Bill Monroe, who if he signed it either did so while the top was off or through the F hole

This would have been made in Japan or Korea? Is there something extra special about 70s-80s epiphone mandolins

Without the autograph it would be worth a few hundred bucks but with the autograph it's worth a few hundred bucks.

He's looking to trade so $12,345 is not the price, it's really internet slang for "no set price"

Monroe used to briefly play, and also Sharpie-sign, mandolins which audience members brought to him after performances -- played my F-5 copy, said it was a "nice horn (?)," which is wasn't, really.

I'd guess the Epi owner asked him to sign it through the f-hole, and got the squiggle you see. I didn't ask him to sign mine, and sold it soon after. Never thought "the touch of the master's hand" (look up the poem!) would have increased the value significantly.

If the autograph is real or not I really don't think it changes value of this instrument. It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

BM apparently signed one of my mandolins - http://www.mandolinarchive.com/gibson/serial/23871 - there was no trace of the signature when I bought it; the shop owner had apparently removed it, but he got quite a shock when I asked him what had happened to it!

The price of 12345 is a dead giveaway somethings not right. Not to mention it’s not worth it.
