Default New Bela Fleck Album out - My Bluegrass Heart

Anyone listening to this yet? David Grisman,Chris Thile, Sam Bush, Sierra Hull all play mandolin on different tracks. Strong album. Highly recommended. I really like Slippery Eel right now.

I watched a live version of Round Rock on YouTube of most of those folks - don't know if that's the recording that's on the album, but it was really good. I will probably order the [double CD] if it's still available next week.

Round Rock is on the album, track #7. Great song as well! Sierra Hull on the mandolin! For anyone reading this, here is the Youtube:

I just got the double cd delivered today. I'll be checking it out as well as seeing Bela Fleck in concert in Tempe AZ for the "My Bluegrass Heart" tour. It should be great! But Sam Bush will be with the band instead of Sierra for that part of the tour.

I would like to catch them in concert as well. I am sure it will be a treat! Last time I saw Bela was when he and Abigail were touring as a duo. I wonder if Sam will do the songs that he didn't play mandolin on. David Grisman is also on this album too. Just chock full of great pickers.

I totally agree, to me this is every bit as groundbreaking as Bela's "Drive" album. I can't stop listening!

I haven't gotten the album yet, but I watched the broadcast of the band's RockyGrass set this evening. It was absolutely astounding --- and was apparently their first live performance. The music has a bluegrass heart, but there is probably one lung transplanted from classical and maybe one transplanted from prog. Aside from the melodic and chordal complexity, the arrangements seamlessly jump all over the place, but nobody needed sheet music. Good luck playing along with these tunes!

Holy Smoke! I'm only 5 tracks in, but this album is scorching! (I will NOT be trying to play along with it anytime soon, LOL). Amazing collection of musicians!!

Here’s a cool interview with Sierra where she talks about the difference between playing with Bela vs the recordings she did with Sturgill Simpson. It’s a small relief to know that even she has to really practice this new material, especially with the complex arrangements. What a great album!!!

That was a great interview Reid. She is such a monster musician. I mean just mind-blowingly good. Thanks for posting that. The NPR interview was interesting too with Bela, they spoke of Bela dedicating the album to Chick Corea and Tony Rice. His liner notes speak to the same thing, which is really cool of Bela.

You forgot Dominick Leslie, who plays on 5 of the 19 tracks. He has one of my favorite mandolin breaks on the album (Baptist Pumpkin Farm) and plays on Round Rock on the album.

Man, this album is incredible and I've listened to it in full at least 4 times now. My favorite breaks on it are Sam's on Vertigo, all of Chris's breaks of course but his Charm School break is insane, Dominick's beak mentioned above, Sierra and Dominick's interplay on Sour Grapes. Billy Contreras's fiddle break on "Our Little Secret" is absolutely otherworldly with that line of double stops he plays.

Everything on it is magical and ups the bar. So cool to see so many new and old players on here, too, adding their voices to it.

Thanks Rob, I absolutely forgot to add Dominick Leslie. I too love that mandolin break on Baptist Pumpkin Farm. I thought I heard him quote part of another fiddle tune toward the end of it, but I could be wrong. Its right around the 1:55-2:00 minute mark if you are curious.

I listened to the Jambase podcast with Bela this morning, it was very good as well. He talked about alot of stuff, but he mentioned how a few of the tunes got their names, which was really fun. He said Charm School was originally called C-Harm because of the C harmonic he plays on it, and somehow Bela added the School part, so it became Charm School and Chris Thile loved the name, so it stuck!

For anyone who's interested, here is the Jambase link:

I was curious who the “Unknown” mandolinist was on those tracks (I don’t have the cd), he plays some tasty stuff.

This album has me thinking of the first Quintet album: barriers knocked down and new paths for acoustic music opened up, minds blown. I feel like someone took Stravinsky, King Crimson, Yes, The classic Bluegrass Boys, the Quintet, Punch Brothers, Miles and Monk then poured them in a big ol’ blender and this is the result.

What’s interesting to me is that most of the solos are, relatively brief. It’s a complex and varied album but definitely not a “jam band” album. Great, great music.

Thanks for posting that!! I only have a digital copy and it's been driving me crazy not knowing who's who on every track. The music is fantastic, of course, I think that goes without saying at this point. My highlights so far (maybe two complete listens) are Vertigo which is a great album opener with the classic band and the tracks that pair Chris Thile with Billy Strings and all the tracks with Sierra Hull and Molly Tuttle.

I ordered the cd through Mandolin when I got the RockyGrass show streaming “ticket,” so I’m not sure when I’ll be getting it. I’m still waiting for the new Watchhouse cd that I bought through Mandolin a month ago when they streamed that album release concert.

Not only an incredible album musically, but is also such an interesting mix of musicians. It's a cool contrast to hear the "old guard" of the Telluride House band vs the other musicians who grew up on that stuff. Dominick Leslie is such a good player. I think he flies under the radar a bit, but I always enjoy his playing.
