    Default Ruhland A5

I was lucky enough to get on Matt Ruhland’s list for this latest batch of A5’s
I have owned a number of fine mandolins including Gibson,Red Diamond,Ellis, and Gilchrist. My Ruhland was only recently completed but it is fantastic! Probably the best mandolin I have had was my 94 Gilchrist F5 but this Ruhland is every bit as good in tone and playability as that Gilchrist. If you get a chance to have Matt build a mandolin for you Jump on it

Matt definitely builds a fine mandolin. I am the fortunate owner of #41 and it is an absolute cannon.

Yeah, really extraordinary across the board: tone, punch, responsiveness, playability. I haven't played a ton of mandolins, but have played a number of darn good ones, never have run across one quite like it.

    Congrats on your upcoming addition.

I’m the proud owner of #30 and on the list for the next batch of As… Matt is building me an A with a top from John Sullivan’s old stash… you could say I’m pretty excited to see what he makes.

TAlex..I was over at Matt's shop when he strung up this most recent batch of A5's.. As per usual, each new one I picked up I thought , Wow..this one has to be the best. One small difference with yours though, was for a brief moment the thought of running out the back and jumping on my horse did cross my mind. I probably wouldn't have gotten far since I would have stopped to keep playing it. Great mandolin, congrats!

I’m trying to figure out how to make a recording that will showcase the great tone of this mandolin. I may have to get some help from my boys.

So his prices start at $4k?

His prices were 4K for a mandolin delivered in 2020. Now his waitlist is a few years out and he works through a couple retailers to sell his instruments, so prices have gone up. I know he works with Greg Boyd’s shop so he would know pricing and I think Morgan Music may be the other shop he is working with but not sure. I would guess somewhere in the 5-6k range for a new one but not totally sure.

I ordered mine in 2019 at that price right after playing one at the Tygh Valley Festival. Guessing the prices have gone up considerably as they should. Matt really has something special going on.

The pricing on Matt's mandos is the classic issue of...if someone has a 4 year waitlist, how much is it worth it to you to purchase a used one today?

On another note..I was the original owner of the Ruhland A5 in the classifieds. I have no financial interest in what happens with it(#55). I will say, that if I could I would buy it back at the price it's listed for immediately. It is exceptional in every single way. Truthfully, since I just got employed again, I'm hoping it's on the market in a couple of months, so I can buy it back.(Sorry got a little bit off-track).

My info I provided is not up to date. Not sure if he is still working with any retailers. Best to just reach out to Matt through his website or social media if you have questions about pricing/ordering.

This is from Greg Boyd’s ad here, in the Classifieds:

“Matt is in high demand, and his mandolins are booked 6 months to a year or more in advance.

We have availability in Spring of 2022 for an A style, and in Fall 2022 we have openings for two more.”
