Default Johs. Møller madolin with a strange positioned string cover.

I just bought this mandolin by danish luthier Johs. Møller(it's still in the post) and wonder if someone put the "stringcover" on the wrong way? I've always only seen the wider piece placed closer to the arm position but here it's the other way round.

By “stringcover”, I assume you’re talking about the “arm rest”. Could it be that it’s designed to be played in a standing position without a strap?

Yes you are right but I just thought that it isn't really an armrest here :-) But You using that designation made me think, that it could have been made for lefthand playing, even though the pickguard is in the normal position.

Or maybe it IS for standing up. I've seen all the G. Formby banjolele players holding their arm exactly where the armrest is here, when they play standing, without a strap but I can't recall any mandolin players, and even less, bowlback players standing up.

I imagined the apprentice rounded off the wrong side and then just glued it on

Yeah, it does look like a left-handed arm rest. Worth a call to the luthier before you accept it?

Hmm. he died more than 50 years ago, but the Music History Museum should have his ledger, where he noted every single instrument he made an even updated it with the name of a new owner if he found out.

So I'll try and see, alhough the serial number has disappeared from the label but I can read "September 1945 or 43" , that should narrow it down.

The placement of the "armrest" is marked down with a pencil, so it looks intensionally.

YES I tried every lightning even UV:

That's more or less exactly where my arm would like it for my playing style.
As Ray says for those who play a high position without a strap.
