Thread: Lyon Healy bowlback? Approximate date?

Default Lyon Healy bowlback? Approximate date?

Hi, all. I picked this little guy out at an estate sale back a couple years ago. Looking for anything you could tell me about it; I am completely naive about mandolins of any kind.

From cruising the threads here before joining, I think it seems to be a Lyon and Healy mandolin, but it has no markings of any kind to verify.

An approximate date of manufacture would be very much appreciated, too. Thanks much.

Looks a lot like my Lyon and Healy bowlback, mine is early 1900s. Yours has a case, that's a nice touch. If you decide to restring it and play it, you need ultralight strings or you will ruin the mandolin. I like playing mine, it has a nice light tone, and I like playing classical and Celtic mandolin.

Headstock doesn't look like any of the brands by L&H. In any case, looks in decent shape and it probably a lower end of some maker probably made between 1900-1915 or so. Yes, light or extra light strings.
