Been away for a while. Whilst out I picked up this nifty little amp. It’s a 1959 champ bought mainly for telecaster use. I discovered that the fender mandolin sounds great through it. Plus, I look like a giant when I’m playing through them. Anyone else using old tweed amps with their electric mandolin?

Sweet little rig you have there F-2 Dave!! Sadly I don't own an old Fender tweed amp but one may cross my path eventually. Currently playing through a new Super Champ X2. Sounds excellent though!! Enjoy yours.

Thanks Len. The super champs I've played through sounded great. Do you use any effects?

I traded a mandolin to a feller for a custom-made Champ clone ... and all my electrics sound good through it.

I did all of my electric instrument recording for Windrush at Saltwell Studio near Huntingdon, England through the studio's resident silver face Champ. (I did eye the resident vintage VOX AC-30 a couple times.) That includes Telecasters and emandos.

    Brilliant little amp.

I have the “vibro” version, it dates from the late 70s and I bought it used not long afterwards. I hadn’t used it for years so decided to get it serviced and discovered that it had been fiddled with. It was originaly built for the US market and someone had changed the transformer to suit the UKs 240 volts. Played hard it always souded as if the speaker cone was ripped so I changed it.

That's very good to know! I brought a few small amps with me from the US when I moved to the UK (and then to France), and I have been constantly toying with he idea of bumping up the intenral transformer so I don't have to remember the external transformer! Now, I'll happily cart an external transformer around.

Just the usual built in suspects, reverb, delay and some overdrive. Nothing exotic. I might add that the line out is a really nice feature.

A tweed Super Champ is an effect. I have a VHT champ clone, and it just sounds right.

Sorta kinda. I play my hot-rodded Fender 5-string through a Takt amp. It's vintage 60's MIJ point-to-point tube amp voiced like a 6V6/Champ. Pushes between 2 and 3 watts through an Alnico 6" driver. It's a small amp but the cabinet is big relative to the speaker giving it a very big, warm voice.
