Default Mando wall hanger at Paulís Coffee and Tea in CO

Iím a big fan of espresso, and with a dairy allergy I have to find a place willing to do milk alternatives. Fortunately for me itís more common these days, I can get oat milk at a lot of places and it is my favorite.

Spending a few days in Colorado, a little southeast of Boulder. I always try and search out a local coffee shop and hope for the bestÖ

I walked in to Paulís Coffee and Tea and there was a distressed silvertone mandolin hanging on the wall! I figured I was in the right place and they sure delivered a good latte.

Not sure how an espresso fan can have a problem with a daity allergy as espresso is always taken black. With milk, it’s no longer an espresso!

Pauls had a long-standing Saturday afternoon bluegrass jam until Covid shut it down.

Espresso is still espresso, even after the customer puts whatever he or she wishes in it. AFAIK, "espresso" actually refers to the method of preparation, not the drink itself, though in common usage it is both. If it had been served with steamed milk infused, then it's a cappuccino. But if it is produced via the espresso method, then it's an espresso, regardless of post-production additions.

I'd better stop there. I haven't had my second cuppa yet.

It must be strong there - looks like it knocked you on your a$$. Here's for easier viewing:

Thanks JB! Not near a desktop where I can correct the image…

And yes, as JB said there is a double shot of espresso in the latte I had. At home I drink straight espresso but on vacation it’s nice to have something to sip on for a while… Alas, most places don’t do a great shot of espresso with a full crema and balanced flavor. Not that I can at home either but I try. I bet they can do it at Paul’s because my plain latte was amazing.

Mandolins and espresso are a great combo!

My personal blend is 1/3 Kona, 1/3 dark Sumatra and 1/3 Caroline's house blend espresso.

I get the darkish roasted Kona from MJA Winery in Santa Cruz http://www.mjavineyards.com
And the other two from Caroline's in Grass Valley https://carolinescoffee.com

    Now for the mandolin!

For anyone that might be interested the mandolin was made by Kay in Chicago.

Oh, yes, ha ha - this started out being about a certain instrument on the wall at a coffee shop, not the coffee itself ...

And of course there is the espresso machiato, which is espesso with some milk and foam.

    Just to digress again.

If you find yourself in Boulder, Ozo pulls a dang good espresso and has a great selection of nondairy milks. But no mandolins on the wall to my knowledge

There is - or rather, was - a Mandolin Coffee company in Kenosha WI. Struggled to hang on but closed in May. Got noticed hereabouts a few weeks ago. Don't see any wall hangers there, either. But they had a nice logo.

Google also suggested a place in Edmonton, which turns out to be actually Mandolin Books and Coffee Company. No reason why the name - there never is - and their "Our Story" page doesn't even mention "mandolin."

I'm also aware there are a few establishments called "Mandolin Cafť" or similar, which subject has been discussed a-plenty. In one of the several threads devoted to this, there is a list of a bunch of these. I'm not going to repeat that over here; this is enough.

Re: Mandolin Coffee. I think it was their logo that helped them fail. We might recognize the outline, but virtually nobody else in the market for coffee would. Looks kinda anatomical or geographic. Also, probably more folks know ‘mandolin’ to be a kitchen tool with very limited relevance to coffee. I just tested my theory on the S.O. here, with half a dozen mandos now scattered around the house: couldn’t interpret the image as anything…

Maybe yes, maybe no. I'm not so sure many people know what a mandoline is, either. Most home food prep is done on a cutting board with a knife. In America, anyway. I don't think the general public has a whole lot of name recognition for either appliance. I just don't think using "mandolin" in your marketing is going to do much good, regardless of imagery, outside of some locations in Kentucky, around Nashville, and other areas of the Southeast.

I don't see what the connection is to "mandolin" for any of these establishments, either. There must be one - I assume, or else, why? They don't make an effort to present a mandolin nor a reason for the name. The same goes for most if not all of the Mandolin Cafťs, as I recall.

There's a Mandolin Wine Company, too. At least they picture a mandolin on their label. But still, no explanation. Elsewhere I found a duvet cover for sale with a photo of a mandolin leaning against a small wine barrel.

Better a distressed mandolin than a distressed barista.

As for naming places after mandolins, look on the bright side: How many Banjo Cafes or Accordion Wines have you heard of?
Emando.com: More than you wanted to know about electric mandolins.

Youse guys are cracking me up!

Though there is the Banjo Hangout, but I believe that's something different ...

FWIW, a quick search turns up no Accordion Cafťs, but there is a Cafť Accordion Orchestra. There's something suspicious about them, though, because they're all hiding behind masks.

They do seem to serve food that most banjo players would recognize, with the possible exception of the French toast.
