Default Taropatch coming my way :-)

After reading a post here about a Taropatch which I didn't know anything about and having sold my Tipple, because it was hopeless to intonate, I now have a Taropatch coming my way from Frane.

"Cool beans," as they say. First, concur with you about tiple intonation; short scale, octave strings, non-compensated bridge -- and you've got the closest thing to an insoluble dilemma. I'll hang on to my Martin T-15 'cause it's cool and I basically want "one of everything," but I tune it slightly "out of tune" so when I fret it, it's slightly out of tune in the other direction.

My main gigging ukulele is a '30's Regal taropatch, beat up and repaired but lots of fun to play. The larger 8-string ukes may not be official taropatches, which when Martin made 'em were definitely soprano-sized. Mine's tenor-sized, and -- funny coincidence -- has its original bridge replaced with a Martin tiple bridge. Dealers now call them "8-string tenor ukuleles" rather than taropatches, but I prefer the more obscure t-patch nomenclature.

    Enjoy!

    Very cool!

I've been looking for a Taropatch uke myself.

I have a 4 string cedar topped Mainland concert ukulele tuned to mandolin tuning using the Aquila GDAE set. The strings are meant for soprano uke but work fine on the Mainland uke. It's a joy to play and I'm hoping to get a Taropatch that I can tune the same way.

What tuning are you planning to use?

That's exactly what I did and it worked reasonably but I still found it hard to press down 3 strings of different gauge to make a clean sound, so I put it for sale at a good price and it sold. But I still miss to have a Martin Tipple on the wall

So I hope that the handmade, all solid Taropatch, a concert by the way, will fill that gap.

I'll just use standard tuning, I have enough difficulties learning to play ukulele, mandolin, 5 string banjo and a mandolin tuned like a Balalayka

I bought that Aquila set as well but didn't like the sound when playing mandolin tunes, so I dropped it, having quite a lot of real mandolins.

I do however have a nice soft sound on my Mandolinetto fitted with Aquila Nylgut mandolin strings. It sounds amazing, especially when (trying to) play(ing) classical tunes.

Actually the original Martin taropatches were larger than sopranos. In fact they were the precursor to the concert size ukes. Info here: https://www.ukulelemag.com/stories/g...rtin-taropatch
