Thread: Thank You Peter Coombe!

    Default Thank You Peter Coombe!

I'm refinishing a tenor banjo and have been looking to up my game from wipe-on finishes such as TruOil, but not wanting to make the leap to sprayed finishes. Here on the Café, I came across Peter's technique for brushing water-borne varnish, which is posted on his website as: "A Modern Brushed Varnish Finish For Music Instruments." I am so impressed. The neck and rim are now complete, and I have so say the results far exceed any other finish I've tried. Plus being water-borne, the entire process is super convenient and VOC-free. I invested in a couple of one-inch Taklon brushes and a set of Stewmac's Micromesh pads, and followed Peter's instructions to the letter. Along the way, I emailed him and he was gracious enough to provide a small update to his process, which includes a couple of additional coats of varnish and simplified polishing methods, which I incorporated.

I am extremely pleased, to say the least. I think I've found my long-term finishing process.

    Thank you, Peter.

Are you using the Target Coatings that Peter recommends and if so, which product? Thanks.

Yes, I'm using the EM2000 gloss that Peter recommends, and also the Aqua Coat clear filler. I didn't get fancy with the base coats of shellac. I just used Zinser shellac/sealer. I was amazed at the gloss I was getting near the final coats. It was difficult to bring myself to go back and work my way through the micromesh pads, but the end result was even better.
