Neat! Venues are primarly New York City, and movie Cleopatra came out in June of '63. Maybe from The Village Voice?

It definitely wasn't Windsor, Ontario, where i was in 1963. I probably couldn't have afforded the $2.50 ticket to see one of those live shows anyway.

"I never did have no trouble with him until he got big enough to be round with bigger boys and off from home. Then he used to follow all these harp blowers, mandoleen (sic) and guitar players."

Yes, November 1963, the weekend after President Kennedy was assassinated. Google a day and date and it pops right up. Quite a lot of good music that weekend there in New York City. I don't know how to choose which show to attend. Probably Bill Monroe/Doc Watson Friday night, Dave Brubeck at Carnegie Hall Saturday night. Not traipsing over to Newark to see Dylan; he'll be back in the Village soon enough.

One name really stuck out, though, because even though I haven't seen it in decades, I knew just who it was. That's Rolf Harris, who had a monster hit with this novelty tune:

Finders Keepers, my duo with the astoundingly talented and versatile Patti Rothberg. Our EP is finally done, and available! PM me, while they last!

Used to see ads like that in the NYC papers all the time. Being as I was 10 years old and lived 75 miles away, I didn't get to many shows.

So J.B., ya got me thinking that there are a bunch of names that could be relevant but not recognizeable to the younger-than-us folks around here.

    - Comedy duo Stiller & Meara are the parents of current actor Ben Stiller. Jerry Stiller, who recently passed, is best known now as George Costanza's father on the Seinfeld TV show.

    - Flip Wilson was a rising comedian at the time, and had his own TV show in the '70s.

    - And I did remember the name Geezinslaw Brothers, but could only guess that they had some sort of "comedy polka" routine. Then I looked them up (ain't the internet grand?) and found this, with actual mandolin content:

Sorry to open the floodgates of "name that picker", but the Geezinslaws led to this clip, again not very well dated. But hey, there IS a mandolin! I'll start with the obvious Glen Campbell and Willie Nelson ...

Well, there's Roy Clark, who'd play with anybody (and hold his own quite well, too), front and center Janie Fricke (took a while to remember her name), and along with Willie, there's Waylon, and Bobby Bare, possibly Ray Stevens, and apparently Lynn Anderson, according to Sam.

The message of the song is timeless, and endlessly repeated. And when have you ever heard a country song quote Sly Stone? That was quite a hoot, as are they. I'll bet they could do just fine if they were ever to play it straight, which they do from time to time. I thought they were going to when they started this one, but soon enough they were off into Geezinslaw territory:

That version of "Over the Rainbow" was originally done by Homer & Jethro. It's a hoot!

And I remember "Tie Me Kangaroo Down" too!

    Memories!
