    Perhaps it is ...

This version was used in the hilarious, brilliant, delightfully cynical British sitcom "Coupling:

It runs through my mind often enough, certainly most of the time the word is used.

Doris Day did it too, in her day:

Journeybear........"Coupling" is a fantastic series and is hilarious. Had to look for quite awhile to find the full series on DVD.

    "Oh Jeffrey!"

Just the thought of that sends me into "The Giggle Loop".

    Boy....did that wander off thread!

Not at all uncommon for National and National-style tailpieces to crack at the bend. Probably fairly easy to replace (said he without ever trying to replace one).

My 1930's National Style 0 guitar had to have the tailpiece replaced. Also the fingerboard planed and re-fretted to correct upward neck warp. National Guitar Co. wasn't ever noted for top-quality woods or hardware, at least not back then.

That may well be. But I did some googling and couldn't find a replacement. I didn't try very hard, as it was discouraging trying to sift through so many false positive hits. I suppose I could visit some fora related to steel instruments ... Thing is, the cons have been piling up about this, outweighing the pros. Also, I'm a bit annoyed the seller made no mention of this. Seems that should have been done, since it's an integral part of the instrument's functionality, and it's so obviously and seriously damaged.

Yessir. I spent a good bit of time comparing resonators, including Republic, and Recording King, and others. What I settled on was the National RM-1. Primarily because it was, of the resonators I tried, the least brassy - the most woody.

Of course one gets a rez for a reason and should not be surprised by brassiness. But some of the resonators can be down right obnoxious. The RM-1, though unmistakably a resonator, has a really musical voice. More so than the others I tried. Now of course that is a judgement call made by an individual and given for free, but that is my experience.

I have learned, volume is really not the whole story. At regular picking pressure, the thing is loud. Loud enough to make the fellow across from you at a jam wince. But that means you can play at regular volumes with light picking pressure, which means that at normal volumes I could play faster than I ever thought possible for me.

Also, increased volume is not the point, if you are trying to play musically. Increased dynamic range is what we have. Increased ability to play expressively. The thing goes from LOUD to whisper, and in a solo or a break, you can really milk the emotions by taking advantage of this.

And of course, you can get the ducks in the middle of the pond to fly away with a two finger G chord, or kill a fly on the far wall with your mighty F#m chord.

Just sayin. Nobody beats the rez.

You got one-a those??? Always wanted one...

With regard to JeffD's post, the other type of resonator that has a less-brash, more musical sound, is a used Dobro mandolin with the spider bridge, rather than the biscuit bridge that all the import National clones have.

I have one of each, 1930's vintage Dobro and National Triolian. They sound quite dissimilar, other than having the long sustain characteristic of resonator instruments. If you want a louder, strident voice, the Nationals and National clones are your ticket. If you want a long-sustaining musical ring, spider-bridge instruments have that.

The old Dobros pop up for sale regularly. Some are labeled Dobro, some Regal -- Regal made the wooden bodies, Dobro the resonator parts. They're not marvels of the luthier's art, and regularly are found needing neck re-sets. Which isn't a big deal.

Assuming you're passing on the cracked-tailpiece, bullet-riddled Republic, you could look at Dobros.

I kinda am, and I'm breaking it off the same way I used to break up with girls (back in ye olden times, when now and then one showed a little interest) - I stopped calling, waiting to see what the other's next move would b, wondering whether I was in the relationship alone. I haven't heard from the seller all week.

Meanwhile, I've started looking at National Triolians, thanks to being inspired by an odd listing as reported over here. I figured I could find one for less than $40K and went price-checking. Seems the going rate is upward of $1000 - except for the one I found for $56 with free shipping. I pulled the trigger on it, but now am having second, third, fourth, and fifth thoughts about it (like I should crack open a fifth and kick myself for what I've done), the details of which I put over here so as not to derail this thread anymore than it already has weathered.

JB, I think this may fall under if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
