Default A Ruhland A5 for sale on Matt's website

Thought I'd put it on the radar of this forum since Matt's mandolins don't come up often...and folks may not be in the habit of checking his website. It's an A5 that was intended to be his shop mando, but I understand he's planning to build himself another one in the next A5 batch. I've played it a couple times and it's a sweet one.

Looks like it’s already sold pending approval. That’s the one before mine from the recent batch of A’s he completed this summer. Really cool he used the same top wood that’s on Ella, which if unless I’m wrong currently belongs to the OP. Matt actually used a tracing of Ella’s headstock for my A, which was also Sullivan inspired.

You're right Reid - Matt got a call a few minutes after I started this thread and sold the mandolin. And true, Matt came over and traced Ella's headstock for your mandolin. Very cool - hope you're digging #68

Thanks Evan! #68 is phenomenal, and only getting better since it’s only about 4 months old. I asked Matt for a Sullivan inspired headstock with just the subtle flowerpot inlay and he went above and beyond matching Ella’s specific headstock. I appreciate your help in making that happen. The wood for both the top (AK bridge Sitka) and back (big leaf maple from the Olympic Peninsula) are both from his “Sullivan Stash” as well, which I think only increases the connection between this instrument and two great Portland luthiers. Matt was such a great guy to deal with, kind and extremely knowledgeable. He sent me update photos throughout the whole process, and absolutely nailed all the customization I wanted like inlay and finish color. I ordered this Ruhland without ever having seen one in person, and couldn’t be happier. I’m not at all surprised that he has a several year waiting list going. His instruments are extremely special.

Someone got themselves a beautiful instrument. I gotta say, I sure am glad I jumped on the opportunity to get a Ruhland when I did...

Well I guess it's time for me to jump in, I'm the person who was fortunate enough to be able to purchase the Ruhland A that Matt had for sale on his website (thank you Evan for the heads up). Matt is a real pleasure to talk with and it's interesting to hear all his ideas about what he's doing in building his instruments. The Ruhland A is quite a stunning mandolin, very powerful and yet still sweet in tone, incredible note separation and sustain. Matt's attention to detail is second to none, the finish work and setup is perfect. I've owned and played instruments from most of the top luthiers and Matt's work belongs up there with the very best.
