Thread: When you stumble upon a tune which stops you in your tracks...

Default When you stumble upon a tune which stops you in your tracks...

From time I like to have a browse through the recent additions to the catalogue of tunes which have been posted to https://thesession.org And now and again I come upon a tune which is new to me and which takes my breath away.

This was the case a few days ago when one of the regular contributors to thesession posted a mazurka - The Crown At Portpatrick - composed by Nigel Gatherer, a name which will be familiar to many in the traditional mandoverse.

I'm a big fan of mazurkas and it wasn't long before I found myself giving the tune a whirl. It's a truly lovely tune which feels great underneath the oul' fingers.

Thanks, Nigel, for a remarkable tune which deserves to become a session standard.

Here's my take(s) on the tune.

    Aidan

    Thanks Aidan, fine playing.
I think OldTime’s my favorite, but along with jigs, these Mazurka’s are great!

Great wee tune, Adrian. Nigel has quite a few fine tunes under his belt - I was at a two-day mixed-instrument session heorganised here in Argyll in the middle of August at Cairnbaan. That Ashbury tenor has a great sound and fine sustain.

Thanks, everyone, for those kind comments. I simply love it when I discover a tune in a cinderella genre which is new to me, which excites my ear and which plays easily from the first practice. That Nigel has managed to create such a tune speaks volumes about his tunesmithing talent...
