    Smile Irish music collection project

I should probably start this thread with an apology in advance for the hours of your life you will never get back. But I won't apologise for the meandering journey of fascinatinon and distractions you'll have along the road. It has probably been referred to within threads in the past as it's been going a while now, but I reckon it merited a dedicated thread.

For the Irish music afficionados out there here's a link to "Port", a quite incredible project to bring together collections of Irish Traditional music (warning it's a massive rabbit hole)
    http://port.itma.ie/browse

One of the most amazing collections for me is the James Goodman collection, now made into an interactive browsing site.
    http://port.itma.ie/browse?collectionId=goodman_vol_1

The significance for me is how much of the the collection was done before the fammine years of the late 1840's which shredded much of the support structure that any oral tradition relies upon and cast the tatters across the planet. You'll have to play the tunes for yourself unless you buy one of the recordings being done by current players interpreting the collections anew. (here's an example from the ITMA site https://www.itma.ie/shop/tunes-from-...an-manuscripts )
    Here's a YT vid of a set....

Anyway like I say, apologies in advance for the diversion.

Eoin: for some reason, all the links you provide except for the last one give me a time-out error. I did get to the ITMA homepage.

Is this the James Goodman Collection: http://goodman.itma.ie/

ITMA is an incredible resource, both online and in person. I spent all of Friday there researching a project. If you are in Dublin I'd strongly recommend calling into the building. It's in one of the most beautiful areas of Dublin, with great facilities and extremely knowledgeable & helpful staff.

I'm also a big fan of the video content they've been producing since the pandemic started. Especially the 'Drawing from the Well' series. I believe I've posted about the series before on a previous thread, but no harm sharing again. All the videos are on their youtube channel:

Their digital library is the business as well, we're so lucky to have such a great resource. Funnily enough, I lived in a bedsit a few doors down from them in the early '90's, couldn't believe me luck!

It's my old stomping ground as a schoolboy, I went to school on Leeson St.
(but we didn't have the ITMA back then)

ITMA really is an invaluable resource to traditional musicians.
Tunes I've gleaned from trawling the digitisations on their website have ended up on both https://alanreid.bandcamp.com/releases
    and https://goitse.bandcamp.com/album/r
and it's highly likely the two album projects I'm involved with in the new year will benefit from the archive material also.

Just as an update I had confirmation that they are aware of the error 522 issue and it has been passed over to their website folks.

Not that they are known to be an issue here, but the news of what's being referred to as the Log4Shell vulnerability and various ransomware attacks recently got me thinking how fragile digital archive systems can be in the age of the hack & how important proper funding of the technical hamster wheel is to maintaining our knowledge the more we rely on it.

    I got an email with the following incase anyone wants a rummage before they figure out the Port site issue;

"However, all of the material on Port is still available on the ITMA website. The interactive scores on Port are also present in the ITMA digital library, and actually there have been hundreds of new scores added to the site here, but not added to Port, over the past year or so.
