Excellent! Delightful! I expect that will be the best mandolinized Christmas song I'll hear this year - perhaps any year.

I really enjoyed that, Jesper. Froliche Weihnachten von Kanada.

    Jesper-

That was excellent and fun, and as others have said, inspirational. I think I learned something from just watching once, although there was so much going on, yet it looked so fluid, that I'm not sure what I learned.

    Happy Holidays.

Hello, mandoworld! I'm a long-time lurker and this is my first post.

I'm another old newbie to mandolin/recovering guitarist, etc. and really love jasper's style, the aforementioned 'chop melody', combining the two great tastes of mandolin into one even tastier package. Takes the loneliness out of playing by oneself

So, i searched the cafe for the keywords 'chop melody' and it seems that jasper has coined the term, as his posts were the only results. Are there any other names for this style?

For the sake of anyone else wanting more insight into this style, including the above requests for a workshop (to which i add my raised hand), here's a concise chop melody instructional video from jasper:

The much more commonly used term is "chord melody." It's a technique with a long history in jazz. More or less, the idea is to play the melody and chords fairly simultaneously. So one must find chord progressions that use chord fingerings that incorporate the melody line. Seems to me, a true "chop melody" approach would use a sharper chording attack, which might be hard to correlate to the melody playing.

For your interest, my mother, who was born on Prince Edward Island in 1921, told me that when she was young, "Jingle Bells" was not considered a Christmas tune, but an "old-time tune", and played at dances year round.
Robert Johnson's mother, describing blues musicians:
"I never did have no trouble with him until he got big enough to be round with bigger boys and off from home. Then he used to follow all these harp blowers, mandoleen (sic) and guitar players."

    Hi Sue!
    Sorry about my late answer.
No, my book is only about improvisation, but as Mankindolin already said,
I've got a tutorial video on YouTube about the Chop Melody Style.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK0R6YlaDrg
I hope to be able to post some other CHOP MELODY STYLE tutorials within too long.
    Mando-Greetings! - Jesper
