Default Octave down pedal/chorus pedal question

    Seeking advice/suggestions…
I have been considering the use of an effects pedal or pedals for live performance…
My rig is an Baggs radius pickup through a ToneDexter.
    Nice mando sound as acoustic.
We frequently play jam improvised stuff in our shows and my guitar player has just added an envelope filter to his rig for some of the modern newgrass sound that is starting to take off in the industry.(BStrings)
Do any of you have experience with fun effects that work with an acoustic mando signal with a piezo pickup?
Any examples of sounds you can steer me to(YouTube?)
This would be used sparingly on certain parts of a show, not going to switch to being an electric band, just wanting to add some modernity to the spice of things.

    Happy pickin fellow pickers!

A touch of chorus cab sound nice on mandolin. I have used octave pedals on guitar and didn't like them. On a mandolin, they will put you in the guitar range which could get muddy as you have a guitar already.

    This is my favourite topic!

I have used a variety of effects on an acoustic mandolin and have enjoyed the sounds I get very much. My effects include envelope filters, flangers, phasers, fuzz, octave pedals, and delays (including reverse delays). The key is to try a few and find what works with your rig and to use a good quality pickup (I use K&K).

I don’t have YouTube videos to recommend, but I can direct you to a couple of albums I have recorded where I used effects on an acoustic mandolin.

I used a Snow White auto wah on Hops, a Tube screamer with an MXR phase 90 on Transcontinental Barley, and a Fuzz Face Germanium with an MXR micro flanger on an octave mandolin on Big Heart in the New World.

On Hops/A Day in the Funk, I start with the phaser then add the Electro Harmonix Pitch Fork. On The Crow and the Scarecrow, I used a reverse reverb then added a fuzz for the second half of my solo. On Riding on the Turtle’s Back, I used the Snow White auto wah on an octave mandolin.

On all amplified tracks, I run the signal through an LR Baggs preamp, then an EHX Soul Food for more beef, then whatever reverb I had.

I hope this helps. I’ll be more than happy to discuss this further in private messages if you are interested.

    Have fun exploring!
