    Hi Jo:
I posted it a few days ago on the "Flatbacks of Note" thread but no one replied (except me). Maybe more folks will comment here.

No problem. Probably better to post it here.

I did post many of the photos at that link. I have attached the photos here.

They are called Preston tuners and require each string to have a loop at both ends. Makes it even more time consuming to restring. Some info here on this Wikipedia page.

Fernandez Music is one of the few sites in the US to deal with these type of instruments mostly Portuguese guitarras. Here is a page describing how to restring and a tool to do so.

An MC thread on the subject with another example of a Portuguese mandolin using that type of tuners.

    That is beautiful!
What about the back though? Has the top shrunk?
I'm guessing that the side would need a fine wedge shape cut into it to repair it?

I've been wondering why there is a paper clip stuck on to the tailpiece cover. And I am tempted, regardless of why the paper clip is there.

I posted the photo of the back above. I know it is sometimes hard to tell from the angle but i thought it was just separated from the back and with some judicious humidifying could be re-glued. However, if you are interested, I would just write to the seller and get some additional photos of the back.

My guess is that it is there to hold an additional pick. Just a guess.
