Thread: Raffaele Calace ID

    Default Raffaele Calace ID

Hi all. Not an attic find, but an instrument I would like to find out a little more about. It's had a bit of TLC and setup in the fairly recent past and sounds gorgeous but I'm not as handy with eight strings as with four so I might look to move it on if I can find any interested parties here or elsewhere.

Beyond that, just knowing a bit about it would be lovely.

    Hi unholysmoke,

the label has something very unusual: "Pizzofalcone" is here misspelled in "Pizzoia lcone", "Egiziaca" seems to me to be written like "Esiziaca", plus Calaces often bore a shellack stamp on the opposite side of Raffaele's picture, either on the top right or on the bottom right corner; the signature is also very different from the one in other Calace's (I own three dated between the 1910s and 1937), here it's like "Roffie" instead of a nicely written "Raffaele" with tiny "e"s.
Plus the headstock is one single piece with the neck, which is definitely unusual, and the purfling is tiny. I attach the picture of the label of one of mine, just for comparison. Maybe some other experts in this thread can give other ideas whether it's an authentic Calace.
