I've heard Mike talk about this rhythm style--it's something Hartford wanted him to do at times in the Hartford String Band. Hartford was a big Ed Haley fan and Haley's wife backed Haley up on mandolin using this style of rhythm playing. Basically, you play the rhythm of the melody in the strum. Mike takes it to another level and adds bass runs, sliding doublestops, and other things to fill out the total sound.
