    Default Black Walnut

I have two boards one about 7 ‘ long the other around 10’ long. There are some tight spots in these and they are dried well. They are 4/4 ruff sawn and planed run about 7/8” thick. How would you use them? Not thick enough to book match for a back but flat sawn with in matching sides would work or maybe sides or neck? Or should I save them for other projects this small piece I cut off is going to be made into a brad point bit case.

The big question is how wide are they? Rough sawn, they possibly could have been jointed one edge and then perhaps resawn for a book matched pair. (I'm a fan of never making things smaller until absolutely necessary). They could be slip matched if the grain is uniform, but I can't tell from the picture. Flat backs are a possibility.

I'm a big fan of walnut, strong, stable and very pretty under finish. Lots of real mahogany has been stained to look like walnut.

They are 4/4 about 6 3/4” wide. The entire board is not suitable because of some checks and knots but a fair amount is solid with a nice grain pattern. I doubt aI could reesa them for suitable book matched backs but I could joint some for back just not book matched. That honestly doesn’t bother me.
