Default Tone Gard on a Northfield Big Mon

Anyone using a Tone Gard on a Big Mon? If so, what size are you using? The standard or the vintage? Appreciate the advice...

    Email Tony Pyres (at Tonegard).

I used the larger "VintageGard" model on my Big Mon for a while and it fit fine. The manufacturer recommends against trying to bend the standard size one to fit. I ended up no longer using it because I did not like the extra weight and it does not fit in my stock Northfield case while installed.

Which case do you have? Recurve or the deluxe?

I use a VintageGard on mine. I also don't use my case so fit isn't a concern.

My Big Mon came with the Recurve case. Its a snug fit, even without trying to add a Tone-Gard. If I had wanted to continue using the Tone-Gard, it might be possible to find a looser case or even a mandola case might work.

I have the standard tone gard on my Big Mon… I only had to give the legs a tiny tug to make them fit perfectly.

There’s NO problem with giving the legs a slight bend to fit your mandolin.

I have the Recurve case that comes with the Big Mon and it fits with the Tone Gard… it’s not overly tight. The legs of the Tone Gard press into the case padding somewhat, but the fit remains snug and doesn’t add much pressure to the mandolin. I’m not worried at all about it.

I was also concerned about these issues when I got my Big Mon…. I’m happy to report that YES, the Tone Gard that I already owned fit just fine, and YES, it still fit in the case, without adding a lot of pressure to the mandolin.

I actually use a Bobelock for the Big Mon because it has a case cover which is very useful this time of year. I have my Collings MF in the recurve. My Northfield F2s is in a Northfield deluxe case...kinda like mandolin case musical chairs.

My thanks to Jake at Banjo Ben's shop who talked with me about the proper size ToneGuard to fit my Northfield Big Mon. As Jstring mentioned (above) about his own Big Mon, Jake said the standard tone guard would fit just fine. I ordered one from him, it showed up a few days later (free shipping) and as Jake and Jstring suggested, it fit just fine. My thanks to you both!

As for fitting in the Bobelock case while on the instrument - no problem!
