    Default Cafe Classified

As of this moment 14 out of 18 postings in the mandolin classifieds are dealers selling their wares.

I'd like to see them separated--dealers in one place and private sellers in another.

    Your thoughts?

The Cafe would have to add a field to the classified ad form—Check this box if you are a dealer—and then add the capability for users to filter their searches for that field.

Not sure how much development time that would take, but it would be significant.

Perhaps it would be more appropriate to contact Scott, the site owner, and discuss this with him.

It's not a big deal to me as I like to see those stores inventory (especially used) anyway.

Many dealers are Cafe sponsors. Filtering them out of queries wouldn't make much sense for the Cafe.

I guess I am not sure why I would care, as long as I knew which was which. If the mandolin i want is being sold, at a price i am willing to pay, who cares if it is being sold by a private seller, or a dealer, or a maker.

I guess it matters more in surfing, where you are just poking around and you want to look at just dealers or just private sellers. I guess.

As the economies change the price differences between dealers and private sellers will change, and there are all sorts of selling strategies, some dubious. It can be hard especially when people start to go bust and are forced to sell. Then there’s often more friction between these two groups.

But as Ranald pointed out, site change suggestions aren’t forum topics.

It's really simple look at the mandolin ad, look who is selling. It's easy spot a dealer. I like looking at several mandolins and dealers have a lot of the mandolins I like to see, and/or hear. There are individuals who buy and sell regularly, should they be a dealer? They have no store front, but I see them selling a lot of instruments. I don't mind it the way it is. Now if it was used cars I want to know the difference.

That's not what he said; he just wants there to be a differentiation between ads from dealers and private sellers. I believe that generally speaking, prices advertised by the former run higher than those from the former. I don't see a pressing need for a change, as whenever I'm window-shopping or checking prices - admittedly, my main reasons for checking - I'd just as soon look at all Gibson Model X mandolins available (my usual sort), regardless of the source. But I don't see how the suggested change would reduce the number of mandolins visible - unless one were to use that filter. I'm perfectly capable of filtering whatever I see on my own.
But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. - Dennis Miller

I should clarify...It's not THAT big of a deal to me. My hourly +/- (!!) perusing includes everything. And I do really enjoy seeing the incredible variety presented.
It's just seems personal sales are more interesting.

If there were dozens of new mandolins listed every day this might be useful but it's not a big deal when there are just a few. I would prefer a better search function with keywords before this

I like it just as it is. I am used to it and don't see any way to make one thing better without making another thing worse. I agree with j4music; If it ain't broke. . .

This comes up every few years and the answer has never varied. If anyone has concerns about the operation of the Classifieds they are welcome to contact me directly via PM or contact form with questions or concerns. But as far as the Forum operating as a space where members think they have a say in how to direct us to operate a separate part of the site as one of the main cores of our business, that's not something we have any interest in hosting.
