Default On Shopgoodwill: tape over the logo and serial number. Why?

Ad copy says this guitar is "unbranded." Well, no, it ain't — somebody has just concealed the brand.

    The question is: Why?

I have my thoughts, but what are yours?

    What's there to think about?

1 to 10 in the state of Georgia. I've heard that the food in the county lockups is awful.

They're probably afraid of getting sued by Gibson.

    Sued? Nah. Arrested? Quite likely.

The recent go-around with the Gibson ‘toy’ flattop, which was almost certainly authentic but was suckering people, ending up in relisting with the truss cover turned to the blank side, shows that they also care about selling fakes as well as stolen items. So I think they may have just been concerned this was either one.
Goodwill makes it clear that they do not make representations about anything, certainly lacking the staff to do so, which is appropriate, but if they had an inkling that this was a valuable thing and might be stolen, I think they should have done something else than taping over.

For the record, it sold for $3911 after 45 bids. Some people don't care, prioritizing owning over ethics.

BTW, I'm super impressed with the frequency and perspicacity of the eagle eyes' activity around here. You guys pick up on so much stuff that probably slips past most others.

So ... do we think the concern is that it might have been hot and the thief dumped it at the Goodwill when they couldn't fence it? Or that it might be fake?

Shame on Goodwill for allowing this on their site. Concealing the ID of a Les Paul "type" -- weaselly listing there, for sure -- when there's no legit reason for the concealment, is pretty low.

Goodwill tries to get -- well, "good will" -- as a charitable organization. Doing a bit of Googling, I find that its a $31 million business, with a CEO earning over $700K.

If someone paid nearly $4K for the guitar, I'll bet it was a person expert enough to recognize a Les Paul "Black Beauty" despite the camouflage. No expert here, and perhaps the purchaser made a mistake, but the whole transaction has a strong aroma, IMHO.

Yeah, if someone donates an instrument and you have reason to think it might be hot, it's your responsibility to call the police, methinks — not cover up logo and serial number to try to make a quick buck.

Really....you can make up all kinds of stories and scenarios. But if you even get more frantic just to support your own "theory"....does it make any more real. Get a grip.

What's your "theory"? Do you even know what you're talking about?

Damn....get the tinfoil out. Do you know?

From a simple piece of tape over a headstock. And you are going to get lathered up. Ok.

A bit later....my apologies to the Cafe for letting things wander off this way.

No one's getting lathered up over a piece of tape on a headstock. I might get a bit lathered at being insulted by know-it-alls, however.

Martin, You started this thread with wondering what people "thought". You were trolling...and you continue it with your "know it all" quote. As far as being insulted.....nah, not going to go there because I really do not care. I agree there is something off on the Goodwill posting (as well as their ethics)....but the entire thread is based on speculation.
