    Default 2020 Duff A5

I received my Duff A5 yesterday and after 16 hours of acclimation, I was able to open it this morning. Thought I would share some pictures of Duff A5 25520. Purchased from Carter Vintage Guitars.

Congratulations! Man, that’s a gorgeous mandolin. I initially passed on a Duff “Scout” F model, which was supposedly the only one he’s built with the back unbound and some other “Econo” features, at Lowe vintage a few years ago just because we were downsizing and I didn’t “need” another mandolin. A week or 2 later I changed my mind, sold a couple, and went back for it (my son is in college near there, so it was a good dual purpose trip). Sadly, the Duff was gone, as was the Pomeroy that had also peaked my interest. I’ll sometimes see high end guitars come through their shop a few times as people upgrade, need cash, whatever, but I haven’t seen either of those turn back up yet.

    Play and enjoy!

Beautiful instrument. But is it really that red?

Look at the mandola in the classifieds:

I think it's CES´ mandola, if he wants to chime in.

I do believe there are to color schemes in the traditional Lloar style instruments with one going in a more brown and the other in a more red direction. If you watch the Bill Monroe "one to one with the master" homespun video, you'll see the more red color scheme in BM´s "Get Up John" mandolin.

Once again: By the looks of it, it's a mandolin worth having.

That looks pretty close to me. Of course this was taken inside under lighting from LCD bulbs. I use a Leica Q2 camera and use Vivid settings with auto white balance. Below are three photos when 255 was built and almost ready to ship.

I played that one years ago when it was in Durham. I liked it pretty well and ended up getting a Duff A-5 in 2018 that looks, plays, and sounds great.

Congrats KMaynard, I think you're going to like it!

Thanks and I have to say it's quickly becoming one of my favorite mandolins. My first experience with a Duff mandolin and I'm really impressed. The midrange tone is so prevalent and cutting. Some have ask me for a sound sample, so I couldn't do better than this guy playing my mandolin. This was when it had just came in to Carter's in spring of 2021.

I’m interviewing Paul tonight for the podcast this week! I love my 2012 F5.

If you have any questions for Paul, let me know below! I’ll see if I can have them make their way into the interview!

    Cheers!

Thanks Daniel. I'd be curious to know any major changes he made along the way to achieving his current tone/style.

Cool Daniel! I'd be intersted to hear his thoughts on tone/attack differences he hears between his tone bar and X-braced instruments. Also, do you know if he's ever done any oval hole instruments?

Will we be able to listen live? If not, when will it be posted?

I'd like to ask him about what wood combination he prefers to get that great midrange bluegrass tone and also if he uses hide-glue in the construction process of his instruments.

    Thanks

Thank you so much for providing me with the opportunity to chat on Mandolins and Beer Daniel. It was a lot of fun and your questions were thoughtful ones.
I just want to clarify one answer I gave to a question from 'Josh', I believe. I stated that a big change in my tone bar sizing came about around 2015 or 2016. I obviously hadn't had my second flat white coffee at that stage because what I meant to say was 2005 or 2006.

So much material to remember and just got that one wrong.

You do a great job promoting the world of mandolins (and beer!) Daniel. Keep up the wonderful podcast and thank you so much for your support!

Thanks Daniel, I really enjoyed the conversation and thanks for posing my question. Paul, really fun hearing your voice and a little about your story. Your A-5 #231 is getting lots and lots of play time here. I get comments on the tone and playability all the time at sessions and jams - more positive feedback on this instrument than any I've had before!

Gabriel, I saw that one when I picked up my Duff A5. That is a wonderful sounding mandolin. The tone Paul gets from his mandolins are superb and I love the midrange that seems to be the signature tone he goes for. I was after a Griffith Loar A5 clone or I would've picked up that 2-point. Enjoy and your video came up on my playlist in YouTube shortly after you posted and I enjoyed listening to your review and playing.
