I repaired F-9 mandolin where the tuners were heavily damaged and tight. All the mounting screws were mounted slightly tilted and not even centered (either holes were predrilled skewed or they just forced the screws in without any pre drilling or looking at angle of screws). The screws pushed the tuner baseplate to side enough that the cogs jammed in the worm and even the posts were jammed against sides of the holes in headstock/bushings. As a result the plastic bearings under cogs wore out and the cogs even damaged the metal support tabs beneath. When removed the tuners worked freely but on mandolin they were VERY hard to turn even without strings on.

    That's amazing!

Just installed a set of Rubner tuners on my old Mid-Missouri Mando and couldn't be happier. It's like a brand new instrument.

How did the install on the Midmo go? Did you need to do any mods?

The bushings supplied with the Rubner's were too small for the Mid-Mo, so I kept the original bushings. Otherwise, it was a perfect fit. No modification needed.

I installed Rubners on my Eastman MDO-305 octave mando several months ago and have been completely happy with the change. I left the factory bushings in place and they work just fine.

They have a couple of $74 sets. They look good. I wonder if they work as well as the more expensive ones.

The more expensive ones simply have more bling. The lower priced Rubners work just fine.

Great! I was hoping someone would say that.

As you can probably tell from my choice of axe, bling ain't my thing.

Charlie, if you are thinking about putting Rubners on the A junior be sure to check the spacing. I don't remember when it changed, and don't know the year of your jr. but the older tuners have a different spacing than modern ones. I have put newer tuners on my '22 A2 by simply cutting the tuner plate at the center of the screw hole with a jewelers saw. It allows the spacing to work and the screw will still hold the tuners on. I figured altering the new tuners was not a problem, I didn't want to alter my mandolin. They have been working for around 30 years now, so it didn't hurt the tuners none.

It has replacement tuners. When I bought it, it was a basket case. I took it to a luthier two or three years ago for an overhaul.

The tuners he put on were just a set he had sitting around his shop. He couldn't remember what — as likely Golden Age as anything.

Anyhow, they're okay, but I'd like to be able to do better.

    Thumbs up Re: Rubner Tuners

I just installed a traditional set of the new 16:1 Rubners on my Brentrup, and they work very smoothly. I like the traditional look and the more reasonable price tag than those they resemble. These were on sale this month, so got an even better deal on them. I used larger dome-head screws to complete the look (they came with countersunk smaller screws). They also come in at a full half ounce lighter than the Waverly, which is noticeable.
I can't recommend them highly enough.

    Good to know. Thanks!

I got mine on sale, too. They're not the color I would have chosen, but the price was right and they are nice looking even though the color isn't period-correct.

Haven't had the time to put them on yet, but this weekend is a possibility — I have a few projects that have been hanging fire while I rehabbed a couple of closets.

It seems like prices have gone up a bit, for the more basic ones for sure. These traditional line are obviously their premium line and in competition with Waverly tuners. I may consider one to replace the GE tuners I have on one of may favorites since they never quite work well. I don’t see them on their site but I would love to get maybe snake wood buttons. I may inquire.

Congrats on those tuners. Me, too, I like the traditional look. The tuner knob diameter looks like 14 mms (like on Schallers). Or am I wrong?

Thanks, Hendrik. I just measured one at 15mm, so yes. They are larger. The plates are also about 1/8" short(er) before the 'arrow' at the D & A end. Aesthetically, that little bit could make all the difference.

I searched for years for replacement, 3-on-plate tuners for an old Guild classical guitar I have, a 1963 Mark IV. In the early years Guild used tuners with 37mm post separation instead of the much more common 35mm. I finally gave up and got Rubner single tuners instead. Beautifully made and they work perfectly. I would definitely go for their mando tuners if I ever need any.

Thanks Paul, for measuring. Odd, why Rubner departs from the originals. AFAIK vintage Waverly knobs have a diameter of either 13 mm (mother of pearl) or 14 mm (ivoroid).

Yes. It seems that there are things that they are not willing to change. They kept the button size from their previous iteration. They have their own way of doing things!
