Does anyone know what that cool blonde mandolin is that A.J. is playing in so many of her videos?

I'd wondered that too. My guess would be Andersen Mandolins and Guitars custom based on he's in Seattle and she appears to be West Coast, and that appears to be an A on the headstocks and he likes doing blond instruments. He also ventures out a bit on headstock design and there appear to be models similar in ways on his site. Could be wrong. One thing for sure, an amazing talent she is, a real feel for vocals and mandolin playing and arranging. Very good guitar player, too. Now's it up to someone to prove otherwise it's some other model, very possible.

It says on another thread that A J Lee says that it was made by someone called Dennis Anderson:

    https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/t...rson-mandolins

It was made by a rancher friend (Dennis) of wood from his ranch in California. It is constructed of Engelmann Spruce, Juniper and Manzanita. The points on the curls are deer antlers. He does great work and recently re-fretted it for me.

AJ is great. She's in Santa Cruz. Check out AJ Lee and Blue Summit.

I wish we could run across more blonde mandolins. Half the reason I want a Big Muddy is because they’re blonde.

I don’t usually get interested in “see this incredibly young musician” videos, but she really had a great soulful mature sound by the time she was 12. Pretty good at 10 in fact. Really got it now obviously.

    Wow...
A.J. Lee, what a beautiful woman, she just stole my heart.
Totally charming video. And what a great sound from the one mic! The audio is huge and so intimate.
    The ensemble is wonderfully unified.
    I love it!

We saw AJ Lee and Blue Summit here in Yorkshire before Covid came along. Great band - all really good musicians, and they seem like nice people too.

Really nice. Though that song always reminds me of "Walk Right Back" by the Everly Bros.

”A friend of ours, Dennis Anderson, built a mandolin with Juniper (Juniperus californica) ribs and backboard, Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) soundboard, and Dennis used Manzanita (Arctostaphylos spp.) for the fretboard, bridge, and peghead overlay. The mandolin looks pretty and sounds really fine. Here's a photo taken at the Good Old Fashioned Bluegrass Festival of Dennis at the mic, Ken on the bass, Chris Rogers (a Luthierie Camp graduate) on the guitar, and me on the banjo.”

What a sweet version of that tune. I'm guessing Neil would be proud. I had the privilege of doing the interview below with AJ, the jewel of Northern Cal, which some may find of interest.
