    Default Here's a Doozy....

Came across this in Elderly's listings.

    https://www.elderly.com/products/gib...41092369481919

Understand it's "as-is", but this is about as "as-is" an instrument as I've ever seen.

The killer is where they say "saddle on backwards."

Heck, with so few strings left it would be a 30 second job to turn that saddle around!

Right? You could do it in the time it takes to type it.

I'm OK with Elderly selling used stuff "As Is". I mean, they could fix it to 'excellent' condition and nearly double the price since I see A50s going for $1000-$2000 on reverb.com.

The description says 'VCG+' I'm not sure what that means. I'd venture to say that a call directly to them might give you a greater understanding for the work this mandolin needs. They may even be able to do the work too.

It's not worth it for Elderly to fix this and sell it. The repair would add too much for what this would sell for. It's difficult if not impossible to glue a brace in an ff hole mandolin thru the ff holes, the back would have to come off. They don't want to fix it, tho they would if someone else were paying for it.

It's "VGC+", So >VG, <E. I'm OK on the meaning, just not on the reason.

It’s likely a consignment so, there isn’t a lot of reason for Elderly to invest time or money into it.

Anything that needs a serious repair ain't "Very Good Condition" in my book. A "VGC" instrument should at least be currently playable.

But that's just me, and I ain't selling (or buying) any instruments (right now...).

I've successfully glued loose braces through the F holes on an A-50, but it was a difficult and messy repair. I had to buy some miniature deep throat clamps from my violin supplier to get the job done, and getting the glue to the right places and getting the clamps to stay put was not easy.

Even though the finish is in very nice shape, I consider that to be a very stiff price for an A-40 that needs $300+ worth of work. I'll pass.

You have to be careful when looking up prices on Reverb. To get a better idea of market values, you have to check the sold listings, and understand that the displayed prices are only the asking price at the time of sale, but not necessarily the actual amount of the final sale.

Yikes. I think it has the original strings so maybe it's those vintage 3 strings that have upped the price
