Default Gibson is preparing to sell NFTs of its most famous models

From GuitarWorld online. Obviously, you might want to Google what's behind an NFT if you don't know.

So they're trying to trademark the visual images of their various products, after failing to trademark the actual items for decades, or over a century for mandolins?

    Good luck with that.

They say a fool and their money are soon parted.
Maybe I am the fool for dismissing NFT's, I'll take that correction if it ever arrives.

It is not particularly complicated. P.T. Barnum had it all figured out 150 years ago. Nothing new under the sun.

Just another example of the new innovation brought in by the new management on the heels of this.

One of the great things about acoustic musical instruments is that they are inherently non-fungible. Unlike NFTs, however, they also have an intrinsic value that isn't dependent on an ephemeral currency's exchange rate.

Okay…. Here’s my attempt at understanding.

    NFT = Non-Fungible Token
In general, it is a one of a kind “digital” asset that can’t be replaced.

Non-Fungible = Unspecific merchandise that cannot be replaced.

Basically, Gibson trademarks the shapes so nobody else can use them digitally and then sells the trademarked images, since they’re not available elsewhere. Urban Dictionary comes trough again:

Only a Gibson is good enough!

What happens if someone else already bought an NFT that contained the images of an F5 mandolin? Would they own the shape?

I think they would own a nonfungible picture of a shape. So they've got that going for them, I suppose.

Today’s other incomprehensible story involves a large white hat, an NFT, an oddball cryptocurrency and a recent First Lady’s auction. Seems that there was a problem.

    Good catch, MikeEdgerton.

Also... I liked the third definition best by RandomAsianMan. That's what compelled me to share, although the first two were funny.

I wonder what are they aiming at with the NFTs? Are they going to sell pretty digital pictures of their guitars or what? As I understand this, it won't make them being able claim rights for any digital picture containing one of their guitars. And not at all wooden real world objects.

What may be interesting is the first half of the subtitle:
[quote]Earlier this month, the company filed for trademark registration of body shapes like the Flying V, Les Paul and SG for the purposes of selling "multimedia files" authenticated by NFTs [\quote]

The trademark registartion could mean more lawsuits (or threats) against other builders of similar instruments. But didn't they fail at that few years ago? Or could the trade mark be limited just to digital pictures of the shapes?

It means that Gibson, like most large companies today, is not a builder or manufacturer. It is a branding exercise run by marketeers. It is an exercise in Sell the Sizzle, not the Steak". "The ONLY goal of a corporation is to make money" as the B-school gurus and motivational consultants intone. If you can sell digital imagery or name recognition or vaporware, rather than a product, it will bring bigger margins without any pesky liability or warranty issues. Not to mention capital investment nor having to deal with troublesome skilled labor expecting to be paid for their skills and effort like you have with a real product. Welcome to the 21st century.

Wow this is just embarrassing for them. When you’re chasing digital trends instead of making investments in what you are known for, run for the hills

I don't think those NFTs will have a very good tone. Probably rather hard to tune as well.

    Eh. NFT? NFW!

BTW & FWIW, these NFTs have NMC. All six offerings are of electric guitars.
