Thread: Recommended Pickup for KM-272 Oval Hole A-Model Mandolin?

Default Recommended Pickup for KM-272 Oval Hole A-Model Mandolin?

I am looking for a good pickup for my Kentucky KM-272 A-Model mandolin.
The mandolin is loud on its own and has a nice sound.

I want to play it live with my rock band although we are not a "balls to the wall" loud band.

I am leaning towards a piezo pickup as its supposedly a more "natural sound" than a magnetic pickup. A pickup with a pre-amp makes a lot of sense. I would like to capture the natural sound of the mandolin.

I am willing to get an inside pickup installed by my mandolin doctor if that is the best choice but are considering every option.

I would appreciate your thoughts and recommendations on what pickup I should get.

    Thank you in advance!

Yup Piezos are popular + a preamp to match several brands are mentioned

well ploughed ground , you can read back in past posts, see: "archive" is a link on the page's bottom

too much loud rock you might need a solid body electric,
instead of a pickup on an acoustic..

    For a rock band? Can't go wrong with a K&K pickup and a Fire-Eye Red-Eye preamp!

I've installed JJB twin head pickups in many instruments (over 2 dozen) including f and oval hole mandolins, mandola, octave mandolin, mandocello, banjos, violins, violas, ukulele, guitars and an upright bass.

I've found an internal soundboard transducer (SBT) with external preamp (I've used several - the RedEye is my current favorite) is the way to go.
