Yessir. He's shown up a goodly amount. A quick search shows 114 threads in which he's mentioned.

That said, I wish I knew about him while he was still alive. Would have liked to have seen him. "Going To My Hometown" seems to be the most often cited, but I'm sure he did other songs on mandolin as well.

Probably should have done a search. But I got excited when I saw this and wanted to share with everyone.

I hear you; I do the same sometimes, so I recognized the signs. No worries.

I did take a look at the rock songs with mando thread - which will eventually be a formidable reference tool, and even in its unfinished state is darned useful. There are four songs listed of him playing mandolin. The most popular one does seem to be "Hometown" - shows up on youtube a lot. I couldn't get any audio from that tweet, though.

I would have liked to have seen him too!! He plays with the kind of energy that you can feel in recordings & I can only imagine being at a show.

Yeah! Johnny Winter was hopped up like that, too. And Joe Cocker. And most of all, Janis, of course.

Rory Gallagher was one of the reasons I took up mandolin.
He toured Australia in the mid-seventies and saw him doing "Going to my Hometown" in Melbourne.
    Wow!

    His guitar-playing was inspirational too.
I was already tired of heavy rock-blues guitarists by then but Rory just had a kind of unselfconscious authenticity that animated him and inspired you.
