There's a Flatiron pancake mandola- I know, not arch top but should be a great instrument- on Reverb:

Needs a little bit of repair but you could probably get him down under 1K.

There's a very beat up old Gibson mandola on Reverb for much less but it needs more repair. Just go to Reverb.com and put in "mandola" and see what comes up- mostly Eastmans but there are others too.

Even at its new price, you won't find anything else that cheap. Since I've played Eastmans but not McBrides, the question I can't answer is whether the Eastman MDA315 is worth the additional euros.
The Eastman would be a much better quality instrument than any offerings McBride's has, and well worth the extra euros in my opinion. I've played a variety of McBride's instruments when killing time in music shops and find them cheap and not so cheerful as regards quality and sound.

Those McBride carved-top 2-point instruments (octave and mandola) with the asymmetrical cutaways, look like some models previously available from Pango/Afanti, don't they?

dimitchatzik, now that you have examples, what is keeping this fron moving forwards?

Understood. The problem is that a good luthier, if he/she charges less than the market, he/she will be swamped with so much work that there will be a waiting list a year long, or longer. Or, lower the quality and individual attention, in order to produce them quicker, which is not what luthier wants to be known for.

So often enough an individual luthier of good quality will raise the price in order to have just enough orders to do in a reasonable amount of time, and provide mandolins of great quality.

Great Price, Great Quality, Great Time: you can get two of these, but likely not all three.
