It appears to be a 12 string instrument....but the nut is cut for 8 strings?!!
Noticed that tail. I have two OS 12 stringers, which is why I took note of the reversed monogram, but I’m not home and can’t remember what the tails are, but these parts often get replaced anyway.
Have been wondering if some repairers, having to strip off decayed celluloid, sometimes substitute a photocopy, and a flipped negative could account for the reversal. Back when, I sometimes used litho film (very high contrast) for etch masks and things.
Incidentally, mine are easier to play than one might think, and pretty strong in the bass. Sort of piano tech.
We know the nut was re-cut and replaced, so could definitely have been set up for left hand … or maybe as you say scratch plate was replaced and installed backwards … it has been around the block a few times for sure

Well, for $67 plus shipping, someone got a fairly solid looking, but down-sized and uniquely modified instrument AND a modern bowl back case. But an illustration of the risks of semi-blind auctions. A few bad surprises, a few bargains. Considering that everything’s a donation, no deceptive sellers, so no bad taste. Almost bought something last week that they thought was a sitar, but wasn’t. Hope the guy who won actually knew what it was!
