Default Trip to Kentucky, is Rosine worth a visit?

We will be visiting Kentucky in mid April for 4-6 days in our RV. Haven't done the full research thing yet, but the tentative plan is to travel from Nashville to Mammoth Cave area, then visit a couple of distilleries (not the entire Bourbon Trail), Louisville, and any other sites of scenic or historic interest. Then head for St. Louis on our way to Colorado. Any advice about things to do or see will be appreciated. Probably not interested in going east of Lexington.

I've been a Bluegrass fan for 50+ years, and would like to visit Bill Monroe sites of interest. Again, I haven't done any research yet, but figured there were folks here who have info on what to see, and opinions on whether a visit to Rosine is "worth it", so to speak. Rosine's a little out of the way for us, but possible. Given the price of gas, every mile counts.

    What say you all?

PS Once I get the exact dates figured out I plan to ask for Nashville tips, so save those for later!

I don't know about an historic interest but there are some fine jams going off in that area. R/

If you do end up heading that way, don't miss the BBQ at the Slick Back right next door to the Rosine Barn Jamboree in Horse Branch.

I went to Rosine, visited the cemetery with Bill Monroe's and Uncle Penn's graves, visited the Monroe home place and otherwise just looked around.
I was never the world's biggest Bill Monroe fan but I was surprised at how much Bluegrass history I felt. As a Bluegrass fan, I think you would enjoy a visit and I think it would be worth your time.

Haven't been to Rosine, but as far as the distilleries go, I would recommend Buffalo Trace above any others. I don't believe they're currently part of the trail, but they have the best tours I've been on. I haven't been there myself, but I've heard nothing but glowing reviews of Three Brothers Distillery. If you're interested in beer at all, I would recommend the brewery tour at West Sixth in Lexington.

There is the Blue Grass Hall of Fame in Owensboro. Not very far from Rosine.

Nashville tips. Don't miss The Station Inn, Carter's and Gruhn's. My favorite distillery is Buffalo Trace in Frankfort.

    Agreed!
Woodford Reserve and Makers Mark are also pretty good tours (and tastings!).

Thanks, and please continue! There are so many distilleries and so little time, your opinions are valuable. Also, suggestions on general sightseeing are welcome. Any thoughts on the cities of Louisville and Lexington, and Bowling Green?

If you're into horses the Kentucky Horse Park is just outside of Lexington. You could check out the Castle at Versailles. (...and by the way that's ver-sales, not ver-sigh...)

When you're in Nashville be sure to check out the full size replica of the Parthenon. Absolutely mind blowing.

Depends, presently, on your fuel consumption budget... the 'worth it' part.

John Hamlett, thanks for the heads up on pronunciation. I'm originally from Texas, and spoken French place names wouldn't be recognizable to a frenchman there either!

If you are coming to Lexington, you may want to take in some horse races at Keeneland.
The James Pepper Distillery in Lexington also has a nice tour.

Berea is a great place for arts, crafts, and festivals of all sorts. Cool history — has a college founded by an abolishionist who survived nine assassination attempts.

The Judds, Red Foley, and Jean Ritchie are from there, too!

I've been there and I agree... dead center Rosine Ky.

Curious though, that the Slick Back lists their own address as:

Louisville has the Louisville Slugger Factory tours. And Rosine is a nice visit for us bluegrassers.

There are all sorts of attractions in and around Louisville. Distilleries, museums of all kinds, parks, Churchill Downs. Near Bowling Green there is the Corvette museum and a dinosaur theme park as well as Mammoth Caves.

I wouldn't recommend making it a destination, and I'm not even sure I would stop by if I was right there and had time (been there, done that).

Didn't notice the RV part before. In Lexington, the Kentucky Horse Park has an excellent RV camp ground. Right outside Lexington, 30 minutes from Frankfort.

I went on a field trip with my daughter to the Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill in Harrodsburg last week. Pretty neat if you're interested in history. Should be supremely pretty in a few weeks when things are really turning green.

    I have a story...

I traveled from South Carolina to in-laws in Illinois, to pick up my wife and kids. I had really been wanting to pass through Rosine. So I visited the cemetery at 12:30 a.m. I had my mandolin with me, I was going to play a song right there at his grave. But I didn't want to be that guy who causes trouble in a cemetery at night. Well, I was visited by a ghost as I stood there under the Blue Moon of Kentucky. I don't believe in ghosts. I can tell more but I don't think anyone cares.

I hope to make it back in the daylight, accompanied by living souls.

I visited that one a long time ago, and have ever since referred to it as "the world's most boring state park".

I, for one, would be interested in your story.
Gave me a bit of a chill just hearing about it.
