    Default Pick grip collage

Enjoying Greg's thread about his Mike Compton lesson. Got me looking at the techniques of some of the titans in our mando world. Just for fun, here's a little puzzle. Hint: Mike is in there. I'll either call the first correct answer, or will post the answer soon. Thx for playing.

    1. Not sure 2. Thile 3. Compton 4. Bush 5. Reischman 6. Monroe 7. Skaggs 8. Wakefield 9. Tiny Moore 10. Grisman 11. Marshall.
Number 1 has me stumped. I am leaning towards Monroe with the F-5L. Cool collage.

Yep, #3 is MC playing Sitting on Top of the World at Music City Roots. I’ve watched that countless times, trying to get just even an ounce of that groove in my playing

Yes, I was going to, but forgot to mention that it was limited to bluegrass, newgrass, etc. Not meant to slight the great classical, choro, and others.

Adam, my post back to Hudmister will give you a good hint. Nice job on the rest. The A5 would have given it away!

Jethro is well represented - occupying spot #1, playing an F5. The photo is snagged from this video.

I appreciated seeing this and found it encouraging. I was aware there were variances, but not to the degree this depicts. I have watched this concept with great interest having come from the guitar world as a player for nearly 60 years. For the last 9 years, I have played the mandolin, and I have worked at finding the balance between what was natural for me on guitar, and what is most effective for developing mandolin technique. Very entertaining and educational post!

Hmmm. I might just stop worrying about my grip. I am somewhere close to the spectrum. Problem being, that removes one of my excuses.
