Default Pickup for flat top acoustic mandolin

    Hi all,
I have been experimenting fitting a pickup to my flat-top mandolin. I bought a Cherub pickup that clips into the oval sound hole but don't get much sound from it.
I added a LR Baggs Gigpro pre-amp and find that the sound is very variable in volume,
Please can you suggest how I should position the pickup? should it be under the strings or beneath the E strings?
Are there better alternatives? I was considering the Fishman bridge pickups, but only the more expensive ones are suitable for a flat-top.
    thanks for your suggestions.
