    Default Mandolin Player Magazine!

Well, I'm a day early for April 1st, but what the heck...

Seems like the time is ripe for a glossy, high-production value magazine for us... don't you think it's about time? There's certainly enough interest in mandolins these days. Maybe somebody like Fretboard Journal (or Scott Tichenor) should consider it.

What do y'all think... would it fly? Lord knows we all love mando porn...

Mandolin World News was the first... time for the next Mando mag!

It could be called Playmando with strategically placed mandolins in centerfolds.

I knew saying "mando porn" would get me into trouble... ok, back to the question at hand...

I'm talking about a mandolin magazine with content... as in a FJ or GP kind of magazine for mandolinists.

News flash: print media is not exactly a growth industry these days.

understood... but there's still plenty of magazine buyers out there. Fretboard Journal has remained viable... I hope!

Neither was "vinyl" a few years ago. One never knows...

Unfortunately, this is an easy parade to rain on. Lots of guitar magazines couldn't make it a fell by the wayside, and as we know guitars are much more numerous and prominent in the world of music.
Someone would have to take it on as a labor of love and really "do it right'. It would be a nice thing to see.

My wife was recently given an issue of "Harpers Bazaar" a two pound high gloss mag devoted to high fashion. 90% ads and little content. Apparently that is what sells, mandolin magazines, not so much.

Personally, I'd much prefer the mando magazine. "High fashion" is not my thing. I have a stash of Niles Hokkanen's old "Mandocrucian" magazines that I've been perusing, and they are very cool, but I'd go for the flashier "Playmando" as well

We had the old Mandolin Magazine that struggled to get anyone to buy it.

    Question Re: Mandolin Player Magazine!

There was one, publisher @ PO Box 142 Powell Butte Oregon 97753
it folded, meaning ceased being printed
in the middle of my subscription for the 13th year.

DG had a Zine, Musix had reprints.

Now that one can surf the web for all things mandolin there's really no chance for a monthly stack of paper stapled together.

Don't get me wrong, I love Mandolin Cafe, but I may be a luddite. I don't care for e-books for instance - sometimes I want paper in my hand.

Sue, I hear you. Don't even get me started with crossword puzzles, they MUST be done on paper. Preferably newspaper but I print them now.

I subscribed to MWN and Mandocrucian digest and Mandolin Magazine until they ended. Also, the more general magazines which often included some articles about mandolins, Frets, Pickin’ and Mugwumps. In fact I have boxes of these cluttering up my house. I have to figure out what to do with them.

Let’s face it, mandolins are essentially a minority instrument and hanging around this Mandolin Cafe bubble we get the feeling that everyone plays one but a large majority of the music playing population haven’t a clue are are uninterested in our beloved instrument. I suppose that if someone really wanted to publish a modern mandolin magazine many of us would subscribe but many of us these days would prefer the interactivity of discussions here on MC.

You're probably right Jim... but, thanks in no small part to The Cafe, it seems as though the popularity of our obscure little instrument is really exploding. Whether or not that would "justify" someone producing a mandolin publication remains too be seen...

    Well there you go...

You know, at the music schools where I teach the ratio of ukulele students to mandolin students must be like 10 to one. It's one thing for a kid (or an adult) to learn to tune a ukulele... quite another thing for mandolin. Uke is the "anybody can play" instrument. Thus their own magazine...

I'd buy it! I miss that sweet smell and anticipation, of the newest copys of favorite mags of the past.

I get all that but I really don't need another "thing" in my place. Probably don't need to cut down more trees, either. I like the idea but I'd be satisfied with an online version. Meanwhile, the Cafe & a bunch of other sites fill the gap, but a focused magazine, with interviews, reviews of products, services & recordings, with great photography & writing would be something I'd subscribe to.
