Roland White helped me change my pick grip. I used to use a three-finger grip. We were at a jam after a Country Gazette show & he remarked that he used to play like I did. I had been thinking about trying to change but it seemed very intimidating so I asked him how he did it. He said he put a flatpick in his pocket & carried it with him everywhere he went. He said it didn't matter what he was doing, driving, watching tv, taking a walk...whatever but he would always have that pick in his hand, in playing position. He said eventually it started feeling more natural just holding the pick that way & eventually he got to where he felt comfortable playing with the new grip. He told me that on all those old Kentucky Colonels albums he was playing with a three-finger pickhold. Anyway, I tried it & it worked for me. I had really been struggling with the shift so I have been forever grateful to Roland White for the time he took to have that conversation with me. Literally changed my life.
