Default Andrew and Emily of Watchhouse Band hit by car in crosswalk

Pictures says it all, luckily he says he'll recover. Saw just now on Instagram and thought worth sharing. In our thoughts, for sure!

Dear friends, last night in Iowa City the two of us were crossing the street at a crosswalk and we were hit by a car. It was terrifying, and we are thankfully going to be just fine—just concussions, stitches, and staples. We are resting and recovering and need to cancel the next few shows. We are planning to restart tour dates in Chicago on Sunday. We are so grateful right now, still just processing.

Wow! In Iowa City pedestrians kind of unofficially have the right of way because it is a university town. There also is a lot of drinking because it is a university town so you cannot depend on it. When I was working and in school down there I would watch the license plates. If they were from Johnson county, where Iowa City is, you could usually step out and they would stop, or at least slow down before running you over. From the rural counties to the south you were mostly safe. If they were from Linn County, to the north, you better step back.

Good luck to Andrew. We don't need another Clarence White incident.

Thank goodness they're alright, more or less. People are so accustomed to cars that it's easy to forget they consist of a ton or more of metal, glass, and rubber hurtling through space at enormous speeds. That's a lot of force being taken for granted, and if it veers out of place it can cause massive destruction. This could have been so much worse, all too easily. I can't help noticing he's making the thumbs-up signal with his left hand, subconsciously or consciously showing there's no damage there. That's always my biggest worry, damage to the fretting hand. All wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.

I hope you both heal thoroughly and quickly. I can't imagine how traumatic an experience getting hit by a car as a pedestrian must be...

I am glad to hear they will be OK, pretty scary!
It is a law in the state of Iowa that motor vehicles must yield right of way to pedestrians in a crosswalk, either by slowing down or coming to a complete stop. Given that this was at night makes it that much more difficult to see pedestrians. I hope the driver stopped and gave assistance.

Ouch! I've been a short term hood ornament twice but was on my bike both times so at least I had a helmet. Glad to hear it wasn't more severe!

We were shocked and saddened to hear about this happening in our town. We have been following and appreciating the music of Andrew and Emily for a very long time - and of course had tickets to the show at the Englert Theatre here for Wednesday night. I can't imagine all the feelings that an event like this must generate - so traumatic on so many levels.

Like others have said - we are so glad that you survived this - really. I have worked on and off at the University Hospital for > 30 year - so if you went there, I hope that you were treated with compassionate, excellent care.

Andrew and Emily - please know that we and many, many of your Iowa City and area fans were heartbroken upon hearing the news of the accident. Our condolences on this event and all the pain, sadness, and terror this had to bring on - let alone the impact on your families, your bandmates, your income and etc etc. And, our best wishes for healing of body and soul - and a complete, speedy recovery.

Not sure if you will be reading this - but here is a photo of the 2nd to the last time you were in Iowa City (2017) ... much happier days. You were both so kind and friendly - we talked about mandos, Emily and Kathy smiled at each other (ha)... that was a great night of music, as was the next time you were here. Hope you are able to work thru this all and if you heart and spirits allow - come back to Iowa City at some time in the future.

I hope they are doing ok and wishing them a speedy recovery. This is scary stuff. It brought back memories of a coworker whose husband was hit by a car while doing his evening walk in their neighborhood (coincidentally also near a university). He had much more than just bruises and scrapes and was bed ridden for months. I'm just glad that's not the case here.

Looking forward to seeing them here in San Diego again. Went to their last show a couple years back and it was incredible.

Yes, I noticed that. I googled to find more about the incident, and I did see this story in another publication, but it was a reprint of this article.

I've been wondering about the driver of the car. Did he/she stop? Was he/she injured? The story seems incomplete. I'll grant it's not really anybody else's business, but I am concerned, as I'll bet also are a lot of others in the musical community, that Andrew and Emily are able to get back on their feet financially as well as physically. Having to cancel a tour puts a big dent in performers' financial situation. It might be time for someone to establish a GoFundMe drive on their behalf.

I hope you both recover quickly and get your lives back to normal. Big fan of your music!

40 years ago, as a student, I was also hit while walking by a careless driver on a rainy night in a busy college town. Thankfully, I just rolled off the hood with no major damage and was sent home by the EMT's. I have a love/hate relationship with college towns -- in general, they seem vibrant, exciting, and full of resources, but many also suffer from overcrowding, lack of parking, people often in a hurry, and the (sometimes wonderful) preoccupations of youth. For myself, at my age, I am glad I no longer live in a college town. YMMV.

Ditto on Mitch's comments!! Andrew and Emily, y'all are a true joy to see and hear and the shows of yours that I have been to in Seattle and Portland (OR) were just amazing. I'm an old coot, 75 years young, and over the years have had some absolute favorites, mostly of the singer/songwriter genre: Ian and Sylvia, Gordon Lightfoot, Tom Rush and, of course, the truly amazing Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. But, I am so thankful to have lived long enough to be around while you guys are making such fun, thoughtful, and meaningful music. I love y'all and wish for a very speedy and absolutely perfect recovery. Hope to see you next time you're in Seattle!!! ....Old Dog Dave

Update on Andrew’s Instagram page: 15 stitches removed. Now i just have to avoid screen time, reading, watching movies, bright lights, closing my eyes while standing up… that said i can still play mando and sing. Looking forward to feeling 100% and hitting the road with my instrumental band in May.
