    Default Mandobass Trio

Here's something you won't see often (and may never want to see again!).

    A quick arrangement of Bob Dorough's '3 is a Magic Number' on 3 mandobasses: a 1927 Gibson J, an 1930s Kalamazoo J, and a c. 1920 Lyon & Healy.

[The audio was recorded first, that's why it gets out of sync]

Are you the only guy on Planet Earth who has three mandobasses? (Mandobassi?) There should be some sort of award for that.

Wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it...I thought when I finally acquired by Larson brothers Stahl, that I had reached the apex pinnacle of mandolin-family ownership.

    Guess again...

You bring up an interesting question. When we go fishing, we fish for bass (plural). When we run bases we try to run them plural, though the opposing team may limit us to one or none. Bassi would imply a Latin root, bassus as singular. There may be no basis for that. Is there a special term for a group of them, like there is for a murder of crows, a school of bass or a gaggle of geese? Perhaps a bundle of beese?

Allen, with a polka-lay-lee in your stable you are pretty close to the pinnacle.

Actually I do know of someone who owned 3 Gibsons and rumor has it that the Baltimore Mandolin Orchestra owns several.

But I'll take the 'least likely to parlay keen interest into a livable wage' award, sure!

The summit for all of us just keeps moving further away!

While I love all my mandolins, I think ultimately I'm after a fretted bass menagerie. So if you ever want to sell that Stahl, contact me first!
