I believe that the Kerman shop is still in operation under (I think) his son. Does anyone know? Last time I checked I thought the mandolins were going for the equivalent of $7000 - $8000 in US dollars but that may have changed.

It takes real effort to be ostensibly famous and media invisible these days. Almost looks like deliberate erasure, as a paranoid person might imagine. The KMQ, Arik, his son, only traces. Jacob Reuven continues to mention, and play the K.

Mr Kerman and (I think) every player I have heard play his mandolins is Israeli, and indeed they seem to only play his instruments. I must say it is all pretty impressive, and very distinctive.

In Jacob Reuven's interview with Arik Kerman he asks him about this:

"It seems that Israeli soloists and students only play your mandolins, can you tell us about your relationship with the Israeli musicians? Do musicians have the ability to influence the construction of instruments?

My interaction with the musicians helped in that the high level of playing of the musicians allowed me to improve the sound, and the musicians for their part improved their playing as a result of improving the mandolin. At the same time, I allow myself to say that I have been privileged to assist a generation of young and talented musicians to play a classical repertoire at a high level. About 30 years ago I established a fund to encourage outstanding mandolin players to play classical music. Young musicians who passed an entrance test were given my mandolin on loan for a period of two years, until entering the Academy, and more. Among these talented young people were you, Avi Avital, and Alon Sariel. "

I thought I had read somewhere that Arik Kerman is well advanced in years and either is preparing to hand everything off to his son or has already done so.

Given the hassle involved in getting a Kerman if you are Not from Israel, these Reverb prices don't strike me as entirely unreasonable—yet there the mandolins sit. Perhaps I'll take another whack at the lottery.
