Default First pass at an armrest...

I spent a little bit longer than I'd care to admit making an armrest on Saturday.
About 2-2 1/2 hours from firewood to finish. I could do better.

It's a bit bigger than it probably needs to be, and I need to seat the bracket a bit deeper... and I swear I ordered a gold bracket.

I had small butternut tree that I cut down early last summer. So I took a piece of that from the firewood pile in the garage, cut it down on the bandsaw, etc. etc.

Finished with what I had on hand which was a bit of poly/stain in one (Olde Maple color).

It seems to do the job even if it's a bit unrefined. The next one will be better.

Pretty decent looking if you ask me. I might have preferred a different kind of wood, but you had this on hand.

Where did you get the bracket? And how can you make it stay on two surfaces that are not parallel?

I agree... or at least a stain that goes better with that sunburst. I have some more interesting wood coming to use for follow up attempts and a couple of other projects. Probably make another couple in a few weeks when I have a bit more time.

Pretty sure I got the bracket on eBay (it's a viola chinrest bracket).

The armrest only comes in contact with the rim, which provides a parallel surface for it to clamp gently onto. There's also a cork lining where it makes contact.

Most cases require adjustments to the top screws. The hardware is seldom squared and sometimes the hole are not drilled to help. I adjust every set.
