He's the last of the Band to go, we just started playing "Ophelia" in the jam circle, I guess we'll have to pick out a few more "Band" tunes.

Sad news. Just heard on the news that Robbie Robertson died at 80. I'm sure that he influenced most of us here. What a great musician, songwriter, storyteller, indigenous rights advocate, and all-round character. Oh, I see that someone already posted this.

Robert Johnson's mother, describing blues musicians:
"I never did have no trouble with him until he got big enough to be round with bigger boys and off from home. Then he used to follow all these harp blowers, mandoleen (sic) and guitar players."

He has been released.
It has been a hard year for musicians.
86 years old, made a live appearance at a house concert this past April even.

Sad that so many members of The Band are gone now, and another great musician of Native American heritage. Sad that he and Levon couldn’t solve their issues before they died. Levon’s storytelling and music has had a great impact on me, as well as that of all members of The Band. Robbie’s guitar playing, songwriting and activism has long been an inspiration. RIP Robbie

That makes Garth Hudson the only surviving member of the original group.
The Band had perhaps the most unique sound of any group from that era.
I heard them at Watkins Glem 50 years ago [you couldn't see anything in that huge crowd]. Wish I could remember it better.
I'd say that an awful lot of us who were there weren't in any condition to remember much. Oh well . . .
Unless he died today, Garth is alive at 88-years old.

The Last Waltz outro makes a very nice mandolin tune. In fact, Levon is playing mandolin on it.
From various sources I have read that Levon and Robbie were getting along OK by the time of Levon's terminal illness.

The entire show is available on youtube, soundchecks included. Not video, just stills added to audio but good quality audio. You can download these files, then if you have a means to remove the visual portion, reduce the file size considerably. Just keep googling till you get there.

I grew up in NW Arkansas. Heard "The Band" play at a local nightclub backing up Ronnie Hawkins, when they were called "The Hawks". I was in a local band playing electric guitar. Robbie was a couple of years younger than me and I was in awe of his picking ability! RIP Robbie.

Well, he never plays it, but there's some mando content here.

“People used to say to me, ‘You’re just a dreamer. You’re gonna end up working down the street, just like me.’
Part of that was crushing, and the other part is, ‘Oh yeah? I’m on a mission.
I’m moving on. And if you look for me, there’s only going to be dust.’”
But Amsterdam was always good for grieving
And London never fails to leave me blue
And Paris never was my kinda town

Thanks for sharing these. I love the Playing For Change project, and this is one of the best of them, naturally. And I love "The Last Waltz."
However ...
I believe that, technically, there is no MC. In the PFC video, there is a double-stringed instrument, but it is an oud. Taimane is playing what could be a five-string mandola or some such, or it could be a ukulele, I can't suss it out. But it's not your regular mandolin. In the TLW video, Robbie is playing a guitar-mandolin double-neck, but he never plays the mandolin part of it. This is the most disappointing part of the movie for me - he has that gorgeous instrument (I've learned from folks here it's actually factory-built, not custom), but doesn't use that capability.
I will say that there is mandolinist content - Rebecca Lovell of Larkin Poe, though she's playing guitar here.
Regardless, it's great to hear two such fine versions of this great, great song. A timeless classic from Day One.

Though she announced this week that she's retiring from performing, Still, Buffy made clear on radio that that she'll never say never, and may occasionally perform onstage again. She's 82 and has been a powerful performer in recent years, with Tina Turner stage energy throughout her 70s -- I saw her a few times -- but I guess there's a limit. Here's her announcement:
