Thread: Iwamoto Tuning Peg

    Default Iwamoto Tuning Peg

I recently moved and one tuning mother-of-pearl peg on my Iwamoto broke during the move -- I don't even have the pieces. What is the best way to replace it? I can use a needle nose pliers to tune, but that is cludgy. It seems drastic to send the whole instrument in for a repair. I have photos, but can't seem to find a way to post one (I am new here). Thanks for advice.

We'll need pictures. I, for one, am not familiar with Iwamoto and I don't know what tuners they use. Also, I'd need to see what exactly is broken.
If you click the little icon that says "insert image" when you hover over it, you can then select your photo and upload it. There are other ways also and someone will probably come along and offer help soon.

Yes, that worked, but we need to see the tuner plates from the back of the peghead to know what the tuners are and where replacement buttons might be available.
    What I can tell;
-they are screw-on buttons, "heat and press" replacements are not the answer.
-square shafts (as opposed to 2 flats), "satin" finish, and the little backlash adjuster showing... probably Waverly. If so, Stewart Macdonald is your source for replacements.

The part that’s missing is usually called a button. There are many options. First, do not lose the tiny screw! Then, you either figure out what brand and model the tuners are, or someone here knows, and you get an exact replacement. Or, you measure the peg shaft accurately, which could be square, or two flat and two rounded sides, and buy a button from a luthier supplier. Or, you add any button with a through hole that can slip on, and use glue.
Try to not use those pliers since you can easily damage the tuner itself.

As John has said, post a picture of the back of the headstock. That way we can identify the tuner manufacturer.

Are the posts where the button was square or is it two flats and two half rounds? My old eyes can't seem to capture that.

Check post #6 where I mentioned the square shafts. Also the protruding lash adjuster (that frankly should be on the other side of the machine). I'm fairly sure they're Waverlys but a look at the plates will confirm.

I figured they were older Gotoh's that have the square shaft and use the same button. The lack of a bushing surprises me.

You're probably right as he is suing some Waverly tuners on his mandolins.

At the red arrow I see the shoulder of a flat perpendicular to the plane of the other flat, so a square shaft.
At the yellow arrows are dark colored bushings (that clearly don't match the color of the tuners them selves).
At the green arrow is the Waverly-style lash adjuster.

The bushings almost looked like concave openings on my phone.

I am a friend of him and may do something to help you. Best of all, you should take a picture of the back of the peg head. I think you have some advice on what the tuner is. And I guess it's Waverly too. masa618.

If you're in the US try calling Stewmac. They own Waverly. They sell the tuners with pearl buttons but I don't see the pearl buttons listed on the website. That would be your best source.

It's been a while since I had to order a set of Waverly mando tuners, but they used to send an extra button (and screw and washer) along with the tuners. The maker might have stashed that extra one. Might as well ask.
