Thread: Gibson A style mandolin, what year?

Default Gibson A style mandolin, what year?

I have inherited a Gibson A style mandolin (A40? A50?) that my dad played for many years until his death 15 years ago. It has 58214 stamped on the back of the headstock and the stenciled logo "Gibson" on the front. I've done some internet searching but still not sure about the production year and model. I bet someone here knows from the serial number. Thanks!

Gibson re-used serial numbers, so two different years correspond with 58214: 1920 and 1962.
If the number was impressed on the back of the peghead, that would point to 1962.
And if the mandolin has f-holes rather than an oval soundhole, that would confirm it as 1962.

An A-50 would have maple back and sides, and a sunburst finish. A-40's had pressed backs, usually mahogany with a back brace visible through the f-holes. Most had a natural finish top. Sunburst tops are also seen, but not very often.

A couple of pictures would be helpful.

Not sure how to post pictures in a "reply" thread but rcc56 nailed it I believe. The mandolin has F holes, appears to have a laminate mahogany back and natural top.

    Natural color top indicates A-40.

So does mahogany back and sides. A-50's were maple, I beleve.
