Default Austin Texas - live music

    Hey There,

I'm heading to Austin, TX in a couple of weeks for "work"...
Wondering about good places to catch live music - especially within walking distance of the Convention Center. I've heard about 6th Street in general...just wondering about particular places I should check out.
If there's something really good in another part of town I suppose I could take a cab or figure out how to Uber...but prefer not to.

    Thanks!

    Kirk

I haven't been downtown in a while but I used to go to the Saxon Pub a lot.

There is a lot of bluegrass around. Don’t know of much near the convention center.

I’ll chime in on The Continental Club, especially upstairs at The Gallery. I’ve only been there twice but the first time in pre-pandemic time Rosie Flores did an amazing show— The Great American Songbook with a jazz trio — one of the best nights of music I ever experienced. And for $5.00 cover! About a week ago, I was in Austin for graduation and caught Casper Rawls downstairs for the price of a donation to the tip jar. He and his band were great — think Buck Owens on steroids.
Upstairs in the Gallery was Barbara Nesbit who was very entertaining . I don’t think I’ll go to Austin without going to the Continental Club. Check the schedule , I think Rosie Flores plays there often

Cool - I’ll definitely check out th Continental Club and the Saxon Pub.
Thanks for the link for Bluegrass - I’ll check it out and see if anything there works with my travel constraints.

When I travelled there for business 30 years ago I really enjoyed the Cactus Cafe on the UT campus. I traveled with perhaps a dozen cd’s and would often catch a band there that happened to be in my little cd collection for that trip. No idea if it is still a venue.

The Gallery (which is above the Continental Club) and C’Boys (just down the street) are both great small venues! 6th Street down town is filled with a bunch of cover bands.

Yes, I saw Willis Alan Ramsey there. Had tickets for Julian Lage & Chris Eldridge April 2020...but we know why that was cancelled. If you get the chance, try to see Paul Glasse if he's playing. One of the great swing jazz mandolin players & local to Austin. Last time i saw him he had the great Rick McRae (guitar player for George Strait) in the band.. Truly amazing!
