Standard Chord Shape Series

Hey all,

I'm thinking of starting a series on my site that covers some basic chord shapes (major, minor, 7th, etc). I know this has been done before elsewhere, but personally I haven't loved the layouts I've seen - so I figured I'd give it a shot.

If you're trying to appeal to a general audience, I'd avoid calling a minor 7 chord "minor dominant." That term is pretty much only heard when discussing music theory You could put it in a footnote.

I like coloring the scale numbers! That really pops out.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the other pages! This is the equivalent of what guitarists call the "CAGED" system, basing barre chords on the corresponding open chords. For example, the first barre chords we learn are the E and A shapes; the others take a bit more dexterity and practice.

Since I'm new on mandolin I was trying to work out a similar scheme, to find my "go to" voicings for chord anywhere on the neck. The majors and 7ths were pretty straightforward; the minors were a bit trickier due to the 5th interval between strings.

In the guitar CAGED system, the root note is the lowest note played. For mando, that's not necessary or even desirable, so it's a bit harder to get my mind around it.

I'd been meaning to look into the mando fretboard logic thread and finally did, but I'll still be happy when these pages are visible.

Thanks for all the feedback! Based on the views I got from the Preview, I've rearranged my posting schedule and will be posting Major triads, Minor triads, Dom 7, minor 7, and major 7 chords every Monday at 8am starting next week (6/20). I've pulled down the preview in preparation for these posts
